더 읽기 :“분산화가 중요한 이유” — — — 크리스 딕슨NKN에 대한 자세한 내용과 정보 : https://nkn.org수십억 개의 노드를 강조하는 이유 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Why billions of nodes matter
Family looking at stars at nightOn March 25th, 2021, we reached over 40,000 full consensus nodes on the NKN mainnet. This is a significant achievement that further consolidate NKN’s position as the largest blockchain network in the world. As a reference, Bitcoin and Ethereum each have about 10,000 full consensus nodes at the moment.NKN Mainnet node map March 29, 2021 by https://nscan.ioSomeone asked recently: “Why do you have so many nodes? Isn’t it hard to manage such a complex system? What is your aim figure to make nodes at the end of the year? 50k, 100k?”And an even deeper question looms large: “why billions of nodes matter?”Why decentralization mattersAs we look back at the inception of the NKN project, we were hugely influenced by an article aptly titled “Why Decentralization Matters” from Chris Dixon of Andreesen Horowitz. Centralized platforms follow a predictable S-curve pattern shown in the attached diagram:S-curve of centralized platforms (source)When the centralized platform starts out, they do everything possible to attract developers, partners and users to get on board the platform, and thus increase the value of the platform.Once the centralized platform becomes successful and reaches the top of S-curve, it switches from collaborating to competing with developers and partners. And they collect data and extract values from the users. In contrast, decentralized web 3.0 platforms like filecoin and NKN will always grow with the developers, creators, partners and users because they are all owners of the platform. The NKN project team does play an important role, however we are just one of the stakeholders in the entire NKN ecosystem and can avoid the S-curve in today’s Internet giants.More nodes, better servicesNKN is fundamentally a data communication network. So the more nodes, the higher the network capacity. Imagine it is Vodafone in Europe, AT&T in the US, or China Mobile in China, the more cell towers they have, the better the user experience on their smartphones. It applies to NKN as well, since each node is doing the data relay and bandwidth sharing.Wall of video streamsToday, many of NKN’s 40,000 nodes have about 100Mbps up to 1Gbps Internet connections, and each can serve from hundreds to thousands of concurrent NKN clients. When aggregated, it amounts to almost 40 million concurrent clients and 40 terabit per second. To make it more visual, 40 Tbps can serve 1.6 million concurrent 4K ultra high definition video streaming (at 25Mps each). That is a staggeringly fat data pipe. Once the number of nodes further increase by 10x to 100x, we can truly serve the entire planet.Geographical diversity is another unique strength of NKN’s decentralized network compared to today’s Internet giants who rely on small amount of jumbo data centers. NKN nodes are running in more than 45 countries and regions around the world, so there are always several edge servers that are close to the users. The improvement in latency can be 2–5 folds, and can make a difference between happy gaming and stuttering frustration.Lastly, NKN nodes are typically running 24x7 and provide good availability compared to traditional p2p networks like BitTorrent. This results in a much more reliable network and predictable performance for users.Every little node is equalWhen you have a 40,000 node network, it is not surprising that someone will ask the question “Is the NKN system very complex and difficult to manage?”. But the answer is also surprisingly simple: “no, the NKN network is very simple and not complex at all”! How can that be?Every NKN node is fully independent and equal, and runs the exact same software. So there is no centralized entity “managing” it. It is the magic of NKN software and code that enables such a large number of nodes to work both independently and collaboratively at the same time. And the resulting system is coherent and cohesive.Cellular Automata animation (source)NKN network is designed to scale up to any number of nodes thanks to our MOCA (Majority vOte Cellular Automata) consensus algorithm. We are over 40,000 today, but millions or even billions will be joined in the coming future, and our code is ready for that.In addition, there are billions of humans and potentially trillions of smart devices out in the world. And we look forward to the day every human and smart device will be a NKN node or client.Owned by community, powered by tokenomicsNKN is a network truly owned by its community and live on its own. Currently, NKN project team is only running less than 0.1% of our total nodes while the community runs more than 99.9% of all nodes. And we run those few nodes mainly for testing purposes, and our node has no special power or privileges. You can always visit https://nscan.io/ for our real time node map, or use our open source crawler to get a list of nodes in the network. In a traditional communication network, carriers like AT&T need to spend billions of dollars and years of building out the 5G network before they see a single cent of revenue. This is both a huge financial burden as well as risk, which often impede the adoption of newer technologies. On the other hand, NKN network was crowd sourced and built by the community from the very beginning. Miners spend as little as a few dollars per month to run a NKN node, with little or no technical skills required. Both the financial risk and costs are spread across the entire community, and can earn tokens which have value even in the very early stages. The tokenomics is indeed powering the growth of the NKN network. We saw an almost direct correlation between NKN token price and number of nodes, since miners are profit driven and they only run nodes if there is profit. At current price, we are around 40,000 nodes. So both theoretically and historically: if NKN price increases, the node number will increase accordingly. Now let’s pause for a moment and ponder: what if Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starlink satellites can be deployed with NKN type of tokenonomics, wouldn’t that be even more revolutionary than what it is already? (some Easter eggs in my essay “SpaceX Starlink Master Plan”)Make sense of billion nodesAt the end of the day, a billion node network will only make sense when there is a rich flora of applications and an abundance of happy users on it. Winning the heart and soul of developers and users will be the deciding factor of a lasting blockchain network like NKN.One one hand, users should not be able to tell if their daily application is running on top of a blockchain network. They can enjoy their everyday activities just like today, be it personal communication, social networking, entertainment, or smart home monitoring, without needing to understand wallet or blockchain. Our chat app nMobile, for example, works just like Signal app. Our secure remote access app nConnect, is used by Synology, Asus, and QNAP and performs better than their original solutions using centralized platforms. On the other hand, users, developers, and partners will be the co-owners of the blockchain network. We have seen some early adoption of community developers like rule110, who built a 100% private file sharing application called surge as well as a suite of applications for miners such as https://nknx.org . With the right incentives and proper support, we foresee more adoption as the NKN network grows. And we are using New Kind of Proposal for the governance of the NKN ecosystem, where every stakeholder has a say in the future directions of the NKN.And we look forward to the day a billion NKN nodes light up the future Internet that is fast, fair and fantastic!Spaceship in hyperdrive (source)For further reading:Why Decentralization Matters”: by Chris Dixon’s of Andreesen HorowitzLearn more about NKN: https://nkn.orgWhy billions of nodes matter was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Binance/NKN AMA Highlights ...
Binance/NKN AMA Highlights — March 2021NKN Binance AMA March 2021On March 25th 2021, NKN founding team did an AMA with Binance English community covering questions from the positioning of NKN project, technology, partnership, commercial potential, community development and many other topics. Here are the transcripts.Founders introductionPhotos of NKN foundersYanbo: Hi everyone, here’s founder and CEO of NKN Yanbo Li speaking, glad to see you all at TG again! I’m a free software enthusiast and open-source advocate, I had years of enterprise experience working for Nokia, Qualcomm focus on networking domain, meanwhile working for Linux Kernel network subsystem as a code contributor just for fun.Later, as one of the co-founders of the blockchain technology giant OnChain which built the blockchain system from scratch, I started NKN in late 2017. You can definitely click here for an in-depth interview with me covering everything from Apples, Boxing, to Coding.https://thedailychain.com/13-questions-interview-with-yanbo-li-nkn-founder-and-onchain-neo-co-founder/Bruce: Hi everyone, I am Bruce. Great to be back, always a nice crowd at Binance TG! We were here in October 2019, but not this huge at 200,000 members.XDA bit about myself: I spent quite a few years building cool technologies and products at Nokia and Google. I love the work by A16Z partner Chris Dixon “Why Decentralization Matters”, and truly believe in the mission of NKN to use cryptonetwork to revolutionize the network communication business. And, I’m based in the San Francisco Bay area.Interview with Bruce Li, Founder and Co-CEO, NKNYilun: Hey guys! This is Yilun Zhang speaking. I am the Co-founder and CTO of NKN.My introduction is quite simple: I got my PhD degree in Physics from the University of California San Diego, with particular expertise in computational neuroscience, trying to understand how the brain works. I’ve been a full stack engineer for years and an enthusiast for cellular automata. And, that’d be it! :-)One-billion nodes with YilunProject IntroductionWe founded NKN in early 2018, aiming to enable everyone to share their Internet connection and bandwidth, and build something like Uber for your Internet connection. If we look at web 3.0 or the future of the Internet, we need three key infrastructure computing, storage, and networking. If you are familiar with filecoin for decentralized storage, then NKN is the equivalent for decentralized networking. We have created the world’s largest blockchain network with almost 40,000 full consensus nodes around the world, but millions or even billions will be joined in the coming future, and our code is ready for that. It is already bigger than Bitcoin and Ethereum, both of which report to have around 10,000 nodes each. And very importantly, almost 99.9% of the nodes are run by communities powered by mining incentives. You can always visit https://nscan.io/ for our real time node map.And if you are wondering where we get the name for the project, it comes from A New Kind of Science, a book written by NKN advisor Stephen Wolfram. Stephen is also the inventor of Mathematica, CEO of Wolfram Research, and a renowned scientist. Please visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Wolfram if you are not familiar with our advisor and the amazing theories/discoveries he has invented.AMA Segment OneQuestion 1.Why do you believe that NKN is the indispensable networking infrastructure for web 3.0, or the future of the Internet?Answer 1.Before ethereum came along to invent Turing complete virtual machines and smart contracts, there had to be a new cryptocurrency made for each different program you wanted to run. This is what NKN does but for data communication.NKN can transmit any type of data, be it data for file sharing (BTT does this), IoT data (Helium does this) or music streaming (AUDIO does this). NKN will bring an end to the era of these highly specialised coins that only transfer one type of data, just as Ethereum ended the era of highly specialised coins that ran only one program. So in the context of web 3.0: if you believe Ethererum is for computing, filecoin is for storage, then NKN is for networking.Question 2.What can a normal person do with NKN?Answer 2.NKN is providing the network communication infrastructure for Web 3.0, so basically any application that needs data communication can use NKN to replace their current centralized client server model. There are several existing products of NKN that are closely relevant to everyone’s daily life.Let’s take the example of nConnect, a distributed service hosted on NKN’s global network that creates an end-to-end secure tunnel for your home servers and devices without exposing any information to the open Internet. 100% security: all data is end-to-end encrypted and never stores in any cloud. We have signed commercial contracts with top 3 NAS vendors: Synology, QNAP, and ASUS and nConnect is available as a subscription service on their app stores. Here we made a really simple illustration of how nConnect works in NAS use cases:A more detailed description of nConnect can be found in our official blog: https://nkn.org/community/blog/nconnect-for-nas-secure-remote-access-to-files-and-apps/ or by visiting our official nConnect page: https://nkn.org/products/nconnect/We have also published nMobile app, an extra secure and trusted chat that is totally decentralized. It is a kind of crypto equivalent of the Signal messaging app. Instead of “don’t be evil”, we have made this App “can’t be evil”.NKN has a distributed architecture with over 30,000 independent relay servers in 40+ countries worldwide that makes it nearly impossible for any malicious party to take down. You’re welcome to check out our nMobile official page for more information:https://nmobile.nkn.orgAnd our community developers have built a 100% private file sharing app called Surge. Surge is even more private than BitTorrent since the user’s IP address is not exposed. https://getsurge.io/https://getsurge.io/Question 3.What does it mean when NKN claims to be the largest blockchain network in terms of full nodes? Why is it relevant or important at all?Answer 3.We have always believed that true decentralization is the fundamental value of blockchain networks, just like bitcoin.Reflecting on the above, NKN network is designed to scale up to any number of nodes thanks to our MOCA consensus algorithm. We are almost 40,000 today, but millions or even billions will be joined in the coming future, and our code is ready for that. It is already bigger than Bitcoin and Ethereum, both of which report to have around 10,000 nodes each. Here’s a screenshot of our nodes that we captured yesterday:Currently, NKN project team is only running less than 0.1% of our total nodes: we are a network truly owned by its community and live on its own. You can always visit https://nscan.io/ for our real time node map.In addition, there are billions of humans and potentially trillions of smart devices out in the world. And we look forward to the day every human and smart device will be a NKN node. Also, if you are interested in joining us as one of our nodes, please visit our mining FAQ for a more detailed instruction:NKN Mining FAQQuestion 4.What is the purpose of NKN token?Answer 4.NKN token plays a central role in the NKN ecosystem, and it is the life blood of NKN. Here’s a few utilities that NKN token provides:By running a NKN node, participants can share their network resources and help others relay data and earn mining rewards. This encourages miners to keep their node running 24X7 and with a good Internet connection.Consumer and enterprise users can use NKN to pay for nConnect secure connection, Content Delivery, game streaming, group chat subscription, and many other services. In addition, miners who host applications (such as nConnect) for the NKN community can earn additional NKN tokens.Question 5.What are the key technologies in NKN?Answer 5First and foremost, NKN builds a true peer to peer network that can send and receive data between any two parties without involving a single central server. It is both end to end and hop by hop encrypted; two communication parties do not need to expose their IP address; it does not require any party to have any public IP address. While traditionally it can only be done with a centralized server set up, now it requires zero server set up, all we need is to embed NKN SDK on the client sideSecondly, another key technology of NKN is our consensus algorithm, called MOCA, which is based on Cellular Automata. In simple terms, each node only needs to talk to a dozen neighbors instead of the entire blockchain network, thus enabling us to scale up to millions and billions of nodes without any problem.Last but not least, NKN utilizes a useful proof of work, called Proof of Relay: Every time a node relays a data packet on behalf of the NKN network, it will earn a chance to earn a mining reward. Just think of relay data as computing hash in Bitcoin.Segment TwoQ1: Which one of the following persons is a NKN advisor?Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author2. Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and Wolfram Research, the author of A New Kind of Science3. Claude Shannon, inventor of Information Theory4. Shoucheng Zhang, quantum physics scientist, Stanford ProfessorQ2. Which one of the following is true about the utility of NKN token? You can earn NKN tokens by hosting applications for the NKN community. You can earn mining rewards by running a NKN node.Users can pay directly to miners or service providers with NKN tokensAll of the aboveQ3: NKN’s consensus algorithm is called MOCA, what does it mean?Majority of the stakers agrees that a proposed block is validEach node makes its decision based on majority vote of neighborsMajority of the network resources are dedicated to calculate hashThe node who has highest number of neighbors is selected as the validatorQ4: How many full consensus (or validator) nodes are in the NKN network?2150–500500–2000> 30,000Q5: What is the difference between NKN and the Helium project?Works on wireless networkCan be used for IoT and smart devicesBuild its own hardwareCan mine by providing data transmissionSegment Three — Round OneQuestion 1@Tarchera: What are your plans for global expansion,on building and developing or getting customers and users, or partnerships?Answer: NKN has worked with many world class partners both in traditional industry as well as in blockchain industry. We have contracts with China Mobile for hosting NKN nodes on their edge cloud servers; We have contracts with iQiYi (Baidu owned China’s largest video platform, a bit like Chinese YouTube) for decentralized video content delivery; We have partnered with all three major cloud platforms: Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, and Digital Ocean for 1-click NKN full node deployment; We have signed contracts with all top tier NAS vendors. In blockchain space:We have worked with Theta, Filecoin, Storj, IoTeX on web 3.0 technical seminars. We plan to be successful both in terms of large enterprise adoption, as well as a strong ecosystem with leading blockchain projects.Question 2@IT’SMEPHILIP: Are you a global project? Can anybody use your services from anywhere?Answer: Of course. The mission of NKN is to free the bits and connect anyone and any place. more than 40K NKN consensus nodes be deployed by community all over the world, these nodes could provide connecting and data transmite services, people could setup the “real” web3.0 app based on NKN which is a decentralization network platform to make their apps network layer more secure and ever faster.Question 3@Tolga: Why do you have so many nodes? Isn’t it hard to manage such a complex system? What is your aim figure to make nodes at the end of the year? 50k, 100k?Answer: We are fundamentally a p2p data communication network. So the more nodes, the higher the network capacity. Imagine it is Vodafone in Europe or AT&T in the US, the more 5G cell towers they have, the better the user experience on their mobile. It applies to NKN as well, since each node is doing the data relay and bandwidth sharing.Every node is fully independent and equal, and runs the exact same software. So there is no centralized entity “managing” it. It is the magic of NKN software and code that enables such a large number of nodes to work together cohesively. We saw a correlation between $NKN token price and number of nodes, since miners are profit driven and they only mine if there is profit. At current price, we are around 40,000 nodes. So if $NKN price increases, the node number will increase accordingly. But I have no crystal ball to predict the future.Question 4@CSidor: Could you elaborate about MOCA and it’s advantages over standard PoW?Answer: MOCA is way more scalable than any other consensus algorithm in terms of network size.It is very intuitive to understand: imagine you want to reach consensus within a large group, instead of everybody trying to scream out to everyone, all you need is sync with your neighbors and know their votes. By doing so, you can naturally change your vote to the majority of your neighbors’ vote. This is how consensus can be reached really fast under this case.We have shown that with certain network topology, global consensus can be reached within a really short amount of time, with very little communication compared to traditional BFT consensus. Therefore, with a negligible amount of resources, MOCA can scale up to billions of nodes, and every one of them are able to reach consensus really fast. This is the key technology that enables us to scale up to the largest blockchain network while using much less resources. And yes, our growth is certainly indefinite. It also enables our node to run on almost all hardware you can find, from a smart router to raspberry pi.Segment Three — Round TwoQuestion 1@UgurUgur: What is the most ambitious goal of your project?Answer: If we look at web 3.0 or the future of the Internet, we need three key infrastructure computing, storage, and networking. The idea of NKN consensus come from Dr Wolfram’s “New kind of science” which based on Cellular Automata, it is a great idea and have lots of potential we can continue developing based on this, like the self evolution of the network etc, there is a link about Dr Wolfram which have more information about that.Question 2@SamantaMitchell: Can you list some great features of NKN that makes it ahead of its competitors? And what problems do you see occurring in the blockchain industry nowadays and how does your project aim to solve these problems?AnswerNKN occupies a cornerstone of web 3.0 (e.g. networking by NKN, storage by filecoin) that any application can utilize;NKN has the unique technical capability to run millions and billions of nodes, and there is no barrier to entry (i.e. everyone can run a NKN node);NKN acts like Uber: instead of building new cars or building new taxi companies, we make the existing Internet more efficient and secure without having to ask everyone to replace all their existing equipment. For example, one of our competitors like Helium only focus on wireless, and only on IoT. Orchid only on VPN. We can already support both wireless and wired, and all types of application including live streaming, video on demand, chat and messaging, IoT communication, file sharing, and moreQuestion 3@ALKanon:What is the basic of NKN web 3.0 ? Is Dr Wolfram explaining the whole matter in his book?Answer: When we talk about Web 3.0, there’s three key infrastructure: Computing, Storage and Networking. You can understand NKN as the networking part for the future Internet, just as filecoin works as storage and Ethereum does computing. The idea of NKN consensus comes from Dr Wolfram’s New kind of science which was inspired by Cellular Automata. Great ideas are discussed in this specific work of art and we find it full of potential to develop on! You can find Dr.Wolfram’s interpretation of NKN in this article: https://medium.com/nknetwork/stephen-wolfram-creator-of-nks-tries-to-understand-nkn-b4018d747a3Question 4@Ichbinrodolf: Is the heavy concentration of NKN nodes in few geographical areas (e.g. 80% in the USA) a problem for an efficient network delivery?AnswerThat data might not be totally accurate, since some cloud platforms (e.g. google cloud) tend to report all their global nodes in the US.NKN nodes aim to provide the fastest data communication service to everyone, so Internet connection quality is very important (speed, latency), thus today the nodes in the US tend to benefit from that due to the Internet physical infrastructure. There is additional $NKN revenue for miners, from value added services like nConnect. They will start in APAC, and will bring additional revenue for nodes there. So we already saw nodes growing strongly in APAC.nConnect and other services will gradually ramp up in Europe and the rest of the world, and we expect to see more mining nodes in Europe and the rest of the world.Question 5@sadecebilgi What advantages does NKN offer compared to other platforms?Answer: NKN can be used in a lot broader scopes and real-world scenarios compared to other blockchain systems. Most blockchain platforms are focused on on-chain transactions only, which solely applies to very limited cases (typically finance-related).As comparison, NKN is also focused on off-chain data transmission, which is the key part of almost any modern application, e.g. IM, games, social apps, etc. Therefore NKN can be adopted to almost any real world application that requires networking. This is a much larger market compared to the current crypto market that we’re familiar with.Last Announcements:We are almost 40,000 nodes globally, woohoo! You can run a NKN node at a cost of $5 per month or less, and be part of the future Internet. When dreaming and building web 3.0 or the future of the Internet, we need three key infrastructure computing, storage, and networking. Filecoin for decentralized storage, Ethereum for decentralized computing, NKN is the equivalent for decentralized networking.Binance/NKN AMA Highlights — March 2021 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

NKN 2020 Year in Review
NKN 2020 Year in ReviewOverview2020 has been a tough year for everyone. The global pandemic struck us unexpectedly and has changed our lives in many aspects. However, the lockdown and travel ban have brought us to a new subject: We have probably underestimated how far the Internet has gone to become the crucial part of our daily life. Working, shopping, working-out, entertaining at home, none of these would be possible if we did not have a reliable and accessible Internet. Humankind now relies on it more than we could ever imagine. Therefore, building the new era for Web 3.0 seems to be an even more important thing to all of us. The pandemic does not only create problems but also heighten opportunities.Fortunately, all the hard work had paid off. NKN concludes 2020 on a very high note, with quite a few business and technology achievements. we had launched our core products such as nMobile and nConnect on top of the dataRide platform, and won two strategy partnerships with Synology and ASUSTOR. We are also under consideration by Coinbase Custody and actively traded on Uniswap as one of the most vibrant DeFi exchanges. We went through difficulties and problems, but we’re striving towards progression and goals.Technology and ProductsThis year, we achieved technology advancements, expanded network growths, and also brought two major products to light. We’ve fulfilled our goal as the largest blockchain network in the world with an average of over 30,000 nodes on our network. Nodes do fluctuate, but our highest score of the year was at 34,000 nodes in a live production network. We launched nMobile at the beginning of August, an instant messaging tool based on NKN’s blockchain powered distributed communication system. With e2e encryption, true private key, local data storage and decentralized identity as its true nature, nMobile earns better trust and confidence than several popular chat apps that are already on the market.nConnect, another major product that we released in 2020 proved its unique advantage through major commercial success. Two leading enterprises in the NAS industry, Synology and ASUSTOR, signed a strategy partnership with NKN in October and December this year on each other’s heels. nConnect provides the solution to remotely access files and apps in NAS, with a standout combination of security, speed and affordability with easy integration.CommercializationAs mentioned above, NKN signed two business contracts with top tier NAS vendor Synology and ASUSTOR with our product nConnect. The apps are available for download in respective NAS vendors’ app market, and boast a subscription based revenue model. With these partnerships, customers of both Synology and ASUSTOR will now have an easy solution that grants them to keep their data within their home/ enterprise network far from predators, while still being able to securely access them from any remote location. As one of the first few software to support Synology DSM version 7.0, nConnect has attracted quite a lot of interest and many demands to go on the legacy 6.2 version where more clients rely on.Token and ExchangesIn 2020, we are continuing our exploration to new crypto exchanges for NKN token holders around the world. In July this year, we supported trading on Uniswap, one of the leading decentralized exchanges of DeFi. Later in October, we are being considered by Coinbase Custody, one of the most trusted custody of digital assets in the world. We are currently working with different US based exchanges and making progressions towards eventual listing.Vision of the FutureWe made quite a few accomplishments in 2020, yet we do not stop here. 2020 has improbably emphasized and reinforced the importance of the Internet to us all, we’d like to see it as a silver lining in the clouds of the pandemic. In the coming year, we plan to optimize our products and technology while pushing more on the marketing and commercial side to gain more customer base, recognition and business success. Our updated roadmap beyond 2020 illustrates some of the directions we are taking, and the bigger ambitions we have.CommunityOur community is something that we value greatly. We could not achieve as much without the support and love from them.In mid of December, Surge, an evolutional P2P file sharing client of 100% anonymous, secure and decentralized nature, was launched. It is an amazing work from our community developer team @Rule 110 and uses the NKN blockchain network for all communication. They are amazing developers with devotion and creativity! Therefore Surge won the NKN Foundation Special Award 2020 and 2 million NKN tokens. We are more than thankful to all of the members of our community and we truly believe that a new Internet better than ever is for us to build together. At the very end of this review, we wish you all a very happy holiday and a wonderful coming year!NKN 2020 Year in Review was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Transcripts: December 2020 ...
You can also watch the full Video AMA on our official YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71S2tJ2I-UcWhat was all bad about the old Internet?Yilun: I wouldn’t say the Internet is wrong or bad today. Generally, when we design a system like the Internet, we always make some assumptions, and we build a system that is best within those assumptions. However, not all early assumptions could still remain valid today. For example, many parts of the Internet were designed assuming that participants are all honest, without considering any attackers. Therefore, malicious messages sent out from a DNS server will possibly be trusted by other DNS servers, and they will update or broadcast them. We have seen these attacks or say accidents in the past and know how they could cause huge trouble to the whole Internet. We also know that a lot of protocols before 2000 or 2010 have no security guarantee in the transport layer assuming that no one is in the middle trying to capture or modify the package. Obviously, history has already proved all these assumptions wrong.Another thing is the IP address, the most popular way of addressing the node in the Internet today is IPv4. People assumed that 32bit would be enough for good, but it actually turned up to be used up only in 20 or 30 years but IPv6 still needs decades until it could actually be widely adopted as a mainstream solution. So, we could see that many assumptions were broken. However I would not define it as bad or wrong, I would see them as problems that we need to solve in order to build a more usable, stable, and secure Internet that we’d like to have today.Yanbo: I think we do not want to judge whether the Internet is bad or good. I think the Internet is always going through self-evolution. As time changes, new requirements and features will appear and the Internet will always adapt to them. Elaborating on these thoughts, NKN is just a part of the Internet, a step to evolution or revolution. Instead of changing “bad” or “old” Internet, it’s just a natural step.Bruce: I’ll add a last point regarding centralization and decentralization, also about the economic incentives. One of the first few food delivery businesses, called waiter.com, was located right next to our office. Many years ago, I saw a Porsche 911 on their parking lot probably belonging to one of their founders. However, all the other cars parked there were like the cheapest and beaten up Soviet Lada cars belonging to those delivery guys. When you have a total centralized system, there’s only a few who can benefit. It is not bad, but a much fairer and appealing way would be decentralization: where benefits are more evenly distributed or at least everyone can share the success of a system. So, in our NKN network, miners are individual entrepreneurs and NKN run nodes only count as a very small part. If nConnect becomes successful, benefits go directly to the miners. Everyone participates and wins together. Can you give us some more intel on Coinbase’s progression?Bruce: We cannot say much until it’s official. However, we do keep regular updates with Coinbase, and we are working with different teams within Coinbase as they do have separate business departments. As some of you might already know, we are under consideration by the Coinbase Custody. They do have Coinbase Pro or Coinbase exchange, but the good news is they all use the same process and standard of evaluating projects. We’re not there yet, but I think we are making satisfactory progress.Could you explain in detail about the difference between nMobile and nMobile PRO?Yanbo: The name might be confusing to some of our users. It may look like nMobile PRO seems to be an enhanced version of nMobile. However, nMobile and nMobile PRO are totally different. nMobile is 100% open source and meant for communication purpose, which means it contains d-chat and our wallet. However, nMobile PRO is made for enterprise purpose, where we integrated nCDN, nConnect features. So, the easy way to separate them is nMobile PRO is more targeted to enterprise, nConnect users, and nCDN miners.A lot of effort has gone into the recent Synology contract and integration. Do you have other NAS vendors in the works or at any stage of business development? If so, can you give any details about them?Bruce: we already announced our coming partnership with ASUSTOR at the very beginning of this AMA, so I guess all of you knew that.We don’t stop there, we have at least one leading enterprise in the pipeline for now. so our goal is to capture the 3 out of top 5 NAS vendors, that is our ambition and we can say that we’re not far from our goal.Have there been any further developments with new nCDN customers?Bruce: We started with iQIYI earlier this year and we’ve already gone through a few billing cycles. In the meantime, we are not putting too much focus on nCDN due to its unique characteristics. First of all, it is very unique to the Chinese market, where the price of CDN overall is very low. Even with NKN’s very low cost base, it will not be very viable when it comes to the international market. Secondly, nCDN does not have a native connection as nConnect service has, as in nConnect miners will be paid directly, where transaction happens only between users and miners. For the nCDN services, we still need to convert payments and that is not the kind of model we’d like to go with. We’d like to integrate with NKN blockchain in a tighter way so we’ll be working to find a better way both for profitability and integration. Our main effort will be slightly shifted towards nConnect for now, since it shows a very unique benefit as it is tightly integrated with NKN’s network and is expected to bring more miners and revenues in the coming months.Any future plans business wise/commercially?Bruce: I’ll lightly touch on the business side in the presentation. From what we have seen in the NAS vendors, it is very clear that we are able to capture the very top of the market. We do have a unique competitiveness there. NAS itself is a very good market, the size of the total market is about 20 billion dollars globally. Of course, nConnect is the remote access part, so we would be a fraction of that. But as long as we could capture that fraction, it will generate very good revenue for 2021 for the NKN ecosystem and especially for the miners. But we will keep on developing more revenue streams and that’s why Yilun was mentioning our strong effort in developing C++ SDK because it helps to solve two problems: first of all, iOS app problems will be fixed as with C++ we can enable a very efficient Apple implementation; and secondly, with C++ we can push to smaller IoT devices. If we look into the home devices, NAS is probably high-end. They have enough CPU and memory to run nConnect pretty fine, but if we go down to the next level such as smart cameras, doorbells or even thermometers, then we have more limitations in terms of processing power, memory and disk. That’s where the C++ SDK together with a lighter client can enable us to go into those smaller devices. And that will open up an even larger business opportunity for us.The official website has been recently redesigned, could you elaborate a bit on your idea of this update? Also, is this an attempt to focus a little bit more on marketing in the future plans?Bruce: Yes, we did put a lot of effort in the renewal of our website. Suzy and our marketing team have been working very closely with our developer team in the past months to complete this new website with refreshed look, better navigation and more information. When we first started the project years ago, Yanbo, Yilun and I had an idea of how the project should be and we did not focus much on the “beauty” of the website, so it was not updated much during these times. I’m actually really thankful to our marketing team and our developer Chris for this total revamp, since not a single code was recycled from the old website and we did everything from scratch. In terms of branding, we actually have something that we’ve been discussing for a while: how can we distinguish the identity of nkn.org, as a community project or a non-profit foundation, from the NKN company, which is commercial for profit enterprise. So, up to now it serves well to combine the two in one place, but soon I think we might have to separate these two to avoid confusion or misunderstanding at certain point. We haven’t figured out the best way to do the separation but I think this will definitely be one of our big topics among the team and our community developers in 2021. If the community or anyone of you have any good ideas, please feel free to contact us and share your opinions.Yanbo: we’ll also have some technical solution to solve the “sometimes laggy” website rendering problem with Chris and Yilun. What are your future marketing and communication plans?Bruce: There are two different parts, we have nkn.org (the token side) and a business side. For the business side, we have nConnect that is still in the very first stage where we do business developments with enterprises such as Synology and ASUSTOR, a B2B sales process. Our sales team will handle these. Then once the service goes live, we start to deal with consumers, which means B2C. And that is also where we start to see the marketing. Suzy and the team in China have been working on how to attract more users. There are two ways, we could go to places where the NAS owners communicate and try to grab their attention, or we could also collaborate with our entrepreneur partners to promote our products together. We will also start with targeted keyword search advertising, related keywords on major search engines can actually attract targeted users who search for a solution.Aside from the product side, we have the NKN token side. We have been working with media platforms such as CoinDesk, Crypto Briefing, Coin Telegraph and etc. We try to get more editorial articles posted and we plan to work with more influencers to do more video interviews. That’s our plan to enhance the recognition of NKN.We do hope that these two pronged effort will help each other. Especially in the crypto world, bigger news only happens when you both have a trustworthy crypto project that also has a partnership with a leading enterprise from the non-crypto world.Your thoughts on Surge dApp?Yanbo: In fact, I like Surge very much. It is almost the top two software that I’d like to make based on the NKN network. The Rule110 team did such an amazing job that it has much more advantages compared to products that are already on the market. I did a lot of testing on Surge; it is still a Beta version, but it has a great potential to serve the mass market in the future. Also, let me announce that we do have an incentive from our NKN foundation to give out for this great software and further announcements will be made before Christmas.Bruce: congratulations on the great Beta launch of Surge! I also use it pretty much every day and I personally think it beats all the products already on the market. And yes, we do have a merry Christmas gift for the team Rule 110 and further announcements will be done soon.Yilun: I’d like to add something from the technology aspect to those people who are not familiar with this technology. Surge is not only a useful product but also has a challenging technology behind it. Personally, as someone in the field I’m super excited to know about the design, implementation details about Surge. It is definitely a challenging task and also a very ambitious one to build a software like Surge. I really appreciate the team for realizing such an amazing job in a short time. I believe that Surge will have a solid user base if they keep on with their awesome job. I’d like to insist that I really enjoyed Surge and I think it fills in as a missing puzzle to our NKN ecosystem. Great job everyone!Do you consider to expand both the number of community built dapps and developers? If so, then by what means?Bruce: I think as Yanbo and Yilun already mentioned, we cannot or do not want to “buy” developers. We used to have “bounty” given out but apparently it did not work in the way we’d expected. We’d like to attract people with internal motivation. And as NKN foundation, we are willing to provide support and incentives whenever we can, but it’s definitely not so much about hanging out carrots in front of everyone since it might not give the right incentive that we initially hoped for.Yanbo: Yes, and let me emphasize, we always value quality more than quantity.Any future partnerships or mutually created products with other blockchain projects?Bruce: I think 2020 has been a difficult year for a lot of projects. We did not have much chance to meet with a lot of the teams in person due to the lockdown. However, we are in contact with some of the amazing projects, for example in the past we had a lot of contacts with IoTeX regarding the IoT side. That’s still an ongoing opportunity, with our C++ SDK, we should be able to support their future generation of security webcam. And we are also looking for other opportunities, like improving the liquidity and activities on Uniswap. We’ll keep you all updated with announcements when new partnerships and collaborations materializes. The Ethereum dev ecosystem is flourishing, have you considered to tap into that community and attract developers that highly value the principles of decentralization?Yilun: Yes of course, if we have a chance to attract the Ethereum community and developers that’d be great. But first let me explain a little about NKN if you’re not familiar. Ethereum and most of the blockchain are focused on the on-chain part, which includes smart contracts or specifically anything that’s related to transactions. However, NKN is more focused on the off-chain part. Therefore, the ecosystem, application that we and our community built are all off-chain products. Which further means that we do not see transactions as the core part. So, I would say compared to what we are building, Ethereum’s apps are closer to traditional applications. How’s the team?Yilun: Basically, since I live in Silicon Valley, I would say the situation here is still quite tense due to the global epidemic. I have been staying, working, playing, doing everything at home for almost a year. I didn’t have much chance to go out for groceries or enjoy an outdoor vacation. And my lifestyle has changed a lot as you can see from my hair, uncut or growing quite wild😊 But I tried a lot of things or services I did not touch before. Somehow, I think this lifestyle works for me, and I think I’m pretty used to it now. 2020 taught us how the Internet has become one of the most important parts of our lives. Only with the Internet, we can do a lot of things remotely. And I would also take this as a proof that NKN has more opportunity because connection between people, things, and the world securely is our most fundamental goal.Bruce: With winter coming, I think the spike of the pandemic is coming back somehow in some of the areas. We’ll probably be still adapting to this mode for a while. But on the other hand, when looking back at 2020, we did achieve quite a lot. And if we look outside the world, SpaceX had launched their crew dragon and cargo dragon, and also Starship was pretty successful, AND Taylor swift released two studio albums in one year which she had never been able to do before. I think we all can achieve a lot even in a pandemic, it is not an excuse to be made. We pushed forward some contracts and released a few products in 2020, but it is not enough. In 2021, we’ll do better. We don’t see the pandemic only as a problem but also as an opportunity. That’d be my new year’s resolution for 2021.Yanbo: 2020 is definitely a tough year for everyone. But I’m still very proud that by the end of this year, especially in December, we have two of our most important products released: Surge from the community and nConnect. There are still things that we could improve and optimize, but we already did a good job to make everything work! In the next year, we have a very full schedule to fulfill and a lot of partnership to develop. I hope you all have a bright future next year and take care of yourself!Transcripts: December 2020 NKN AMA was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

NKN Foundation 2020 Special...
Just in time for the holiday season, NKN foundation is pleased to announce Surge as the winner of our special award of the year 2020! The community developer team @rule110, who built Surge, will receive an award of 2 million NKN tokens. This year was very tough for every one of us but at least we can rejoice in the timely launch of the most significant and ambitious web 3.0 application ever built on top of NKN network and blockchain to date!Surge is a new and special P2P file sharing client that is 100% anonymous, secure and decentralized. It uses NKN blockchain network for all communication — be it publishing new file listing or file transfer itself. Consisting of more than 30,000+ relay nodes, NKN network allows Surge to completely avoid the use of direct TCP/IP connection between recipient and sender — that way we can guarantee that neither the sender, nor the receiver nor anybody else can see from where a file is coming from and where it is being delivered to. The additional hop-2-hop encryption makes it impossible to intercept any data transmission. The open Beta has been launched for a week, we could see a lot of positive feedback both from members of our community and from groups or individuals who share an interest in P2P file sharing. More than 30 concurrent clients were monitored on the very launch day, which proves a very possible bright future of bringing Surge to mass adoption. And Surge has gained more than 250 upvotes in 24 hours, after successfully launching on Product Hunt.Surge is definitely built with the latest and coolest tech out there but building a P2P client wasn’t at all easy. It required months of intensive hard work with a full devotion of our community developer team @Rule110.When asked of the original idea for Surge, Christian Busch, a member of team @Rule110 states:“when we talk about sharing files in a peer-to-peer network there is always a downside many people complain about: the lack of anonymity and security. The main problem here is that the IP addresses of both sender and recipient will always be exposed. You can use a proxy server or VPN services to cover your identity but you will always need to trust a third party provider for that. When it comes to security some file transfer applications utilize end-to-end encryption but due to their centralized approach they are still susceptible to various attacks such as man in the middle or DDoS attacks.Tldr: Modern file sharing can be reasonably secure but never anonymous. ☺So, we decided to disrupt P2P file sharing, with Surge and we can actually prove and claim that Surge is 100% anonymous, secure and decentralized.”NKN foundation truly values our amazing community and especially our members’ devotion and creativity. Therefore this is the biggest award NKN Foundation has given out to date. As our founder Yanbo Li commented“Surge is not only a super useful application, but also is a very beautiful application. I’m amazed at the high quality and sleek user experience of the software even at the public beta stage. The tight integration of Surge with NKN network makes it unique and hard to beat. And I can say without doubt that it is better than any popular P2P file sharing apps like BitTorrent.”Together, we can make web 3.0 applications better than centralized web 2.0 monopolies of today, and rebuild the new internet better than it has ever been.Surge is built simple yet with solid and beautiful building blocks: Golang as backend, vue.js & wails for frontend and the NKN blockchain for all transactions. All the code is open source and available on GitHub.Surge is still on open Beta and welcomes any encouraging feedback or experts’ opinions. Please feel free to drop a message for the team at their official twitter @Rule110 or Surge’s official page: https://surge.rule110.ioNKN Foundation 2020 Special Award goes to Surge! was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

NKN offers NKN Commercial o...
NKN Google CloudSan Mateo, California, November 3rd, 2020. NKN is excited to be collaborating with Google Cloud and Searce, to bring a new hybrid SaaS model to the world. This new solution enables users of Google Cloud to run NKN Commercial, a Google Cloud Marketplace application which enables building of a horizontally scalable networking SaaS infrastructure that can reach a tunable balance of service quality as well as operational cost.NKN Lab Inc, as well as other enterprise customers, rely on Google Cloud’s performance, global footprint, and comprehensive toolset to deploy very large networking Software as a Solution (SaaS) with very little administrative overhead. For NKN Commercial, this will ensure a high quality Service Level Agreement for NKN’s paying customers such as large video content owners. The new hybrid SaaS solution will enable more individuals and small businesses to utilize Google Cloud to run NKN solutions in a crowdsourced fashion. This is accomplished using the NKN Commercial marketplace application, which makes it possible to run NKN software without the complex setup or IT expertise needed. One of the challenges is how to identify all the NKN Commercial usage (compute, networking, storage) across many separate enterprise and individual accounts on Google Cloud. Searce, a Google Cloud partner, came into the play and helped to craft a technical tagging solution for this purpose. Such a solution has wider application, since the hybrid SaaS model has the potential to take off and complement the existing single enterprise deployment. We believe that this new hybrid SaaS model will enable a new generation of enterprise services in the rapidly growing microservices market. Secure content delivery, messaging, file transfer, and streaming are just a few examples of the services that are already available with hybrid SaaS. Web 3.0 Example: filecoin
Filecoin miningFilecoin in 100 wordsFilecoin’s mission is “to create a decentralized, efficient, and robust foundation for humanity’s information.” Dubbed a paid version of ipfs, it creates a free market to bridge between storage users and crowd sourced storage providers. Filecoin (FIL) is a utility token that enables mining as well as paying for storage services. Filecoin aims to compete with centralized storage services like Amazon AWS, as well as other blockchain projects like storj and sia. Filecoin mainnet went live on October 15th, 2020 and FIL is listed on most major exchanges. What is web 3.0 storageFilecoin is a prime example of Web 3.0, focusing on decentralized storage as one of the three pillars of Internet infrastructure. Web 1.0 and 2.0 storage are dominated by large cloud providers such Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure, Oracle cloud, Baidu, and Tencent.Problems filecoin addressesIn contrast, Filecoin and web 3.0 storage has the following characteristics and advantages:Decentralized and crowdsourced: anyone with extra storage can provide storage services to others. As one study finds, there are lots of idle and underutilized storage in the world, so web 3.0 storage will make effective use of them.Token incentives: Web 3.0 storage typically used a utility token to facilitate the exchange of storage services. There are a few benefits: the lack of centrally controlled corporation means less “platform tax” and better pricing for both buyers and sellers; payment settlement can be instantaneous and verifiable; a smart contract can enable flexible and fluid pricing.Proof of storage: since there is no centralized authority to ensure the client’s data are actually stored without tampering or cheating, it is critical to have an advanced consensus algorithm to enable everyone in the ecosystem the ability to verify the storage of client’s data. This is where math and algorithms replace trusted authority, and is crucial to the success or failure of a particular web 3.0 storage project.Indexing and search of data: since all the data are distributed among many crowd sourced servers and there is no single centralized server to index all the data, web 3.0 storage solutions typically have a distributed indexing and search functionality. In filecoin and ipfs, there is also content based addressing which is not dependent on where the content is stored.Data upload and retrieval: it is not enough just to store the data, fast and efficient upload and retrieval are equally important for commercial grade storage services. In Web 3.0 storage systems, there are typically Content Delivery Network types of services to accelerate the uploading and downloading of data.A brief history: from ipfs to filecoinMost people learned about filecoin because of ipfs, or Interplanetary File System. Therefore it is useful to understand ipfs a little bit as one of the foundations of filecoin. Ipfs uses content addressing and p2p network to store files in a decentralized manner. It was launched as alpha in 2015, and quickly became popular among tech enthusiasts. One notable use case is creating a limited and immutable mirror for wikipedia. It is true p2p in the sense that users will host the content for free and in kind, which could be somewhat limiting since we quickly run out of good samaritan who donate storage space for the good of mankind.Ipfs mirrored version of wikipediaThen enter the filecoin, which is dubbed a “paid version of ipfs”. The key new ingredients that filecoin added to the ipfs are token incentive and two-sided market, so the web 3.0 storage solution can move beyond enthusiast to real enterprise adoption. Filecoin’s ICO in 2017, available only to accredited investors, raised over 257 million dollars and set a new record at the time. There is tremendous interest in a major alternative to web 1.0 and 2.0 storage solutions, which is built by a strong developer team with ipfs credibility and backed by top tier VCs.Fast forward to 2020. After three years of development and several delays, Filecoin launched mainnet on October 15th, 2020. As of this writing, Filecoin token (FIL) is listed on coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, Binance, Huobi, and many other exchanges.Use cases and applicationsFilecoin brings along a large number of 3rd party applications from ipfs, as illustrated in the following diagram.IPFS ecosystemIn addition, there are some early use cases that leverage filecoin:Securely distributing large data sets onto thousands of computersStoring all of web 3.0’s dataVideo publishing as alternative to YouTube or VimeoSocial networking, gaming, and AR/VR data storageStoring developer assets such as container and virtual machines imagesIt is still early days of filecoin, and we expect to see more innovative dApps to be built on top of filecoin and ipfs in the coming months.TechnologyFilecoin is a more complex system than ipfs. Proof of Storage, is at the heart of filecoin and sets it apart from other web 3.0 storage projects. It is a variation of the Proof of Space algorithms, while adding security and efficiency enhancements. Even tuning the parameters for the algorithms is so demanding that the filecoin team has to build new computational tools to automate the process.Proof of Storage in filecoinAccording to filecoin’s founder Juan Benet:“I think no other network is using Proof of Replication, it’s an advantage we have that we created that field. So that’s one differentiating factor. We are also the only one with this fluid market structure that is meant to be optimized based on an ask and bid structure where miners and clients are able to reason about prices together and then form deals out of that. I think we are also the only ones doing consensus backed by useful storage. With other networks it may be a consensus backed by a Proof of Space, but in our case it’s useful. Those are the three biggest differentiating factors of Filecoin.”For a more in-depth description of filecoin’s Proof of Storage technology, you can read in the blog “What Sets us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System” as well as watching the Zero Knowledge podcast episode 106 “IPFS, Libp2p & Filecoin with Juan Benet”.Business modelFilecoin’s business model is similar to other sharing economies (or gig economies) such as Uber or Airbnb, it creates a free market to bridge the consumers and providers of storage. The main difference is that this market is shared and owned by the filecoin community, instead of one single corporate entity. Protocol Labs, the developers who built the filecoin protocol, is just one of the several stakeholders in the filecoin market.Filecoin enables free market for storageAnd the filecoin token is utilized to facilitate the exchange of services, among several stakeholders in the ecosystem such as miners, clients, developers, and token holders. It is minable through useful work, by proving that they are storing a unique copy of the client’s data.Stakeholders and interactions within filecoin ecosystemEcosystem strengthFilecoin has a very strong ecosystem, in part due to its popularity carried over from ipfs, libp2p and other successful projects. It attracted a sizable and vibrant developer community and 3rd party companies to work on and extend its ecosystem.Filecoin also attracted a large number of miners, since its early testnet days. Many who missed the early bitcoin mining fortune, consider filecoin the next potential gold mine. On the eve of filecoin mainnet launch (October 14th, 2020), the miners have already amassed a respectable 561 PiB of storage on its testnet.ipfs mining communityTrends and futureFilecoin interworking with other web 3.0 projectsWith the launch of mainnet on October 15th, 2020, filecoin’s journey towards a widely adopted web 3.0 storage solution just gets started. In addition to many enhancements to the protocol itself and further expanding the available storage space to exabytes of data, Filecoin intends to build bridges and standards to interwork with other blockchain projects.Together with Compute (Ethereum, Polkadot) and Networking (NKN, Helium), Storage solutions like filecoin will forge the infrastructure foundation of Web 3.0 to create a decentralized, efficient, and robust foundation for humanity’s information.AcknowledgmentThe NKN editorial team thanks filecoin and ipfs team, and especially Colin Evran and Molly Mackinley, for supplying some of the material used in this blog post. You can watch an excellent video presentation of ipfs from NKN hosted “Web 3.0 Tech Talk: the power of offchain”:Web 3.0 presentations:https://blog.nkn.org/web-3-0-tech-talk-the-power-of-offchain-videos-available-on-youtube/For further readinghttps://www.coinbureau.com/review/filecoin-fil/https://blog.coinlist.co/filecoin-why-its-a-big-deal/Web 3.0 Example: filecoin was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

nConnect for NAS: secure re...
A NKN case studyOne of the biggest challenges for enterprise and home internet users is being able to securely access your data and services from anywhere. Your phone, tablet, and laptop have limited storage; while cloud services such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive force you to upload all your data to the cloud. This not only is tedious and time consuming but also creates a target for hackers looking for your sensitive data. NKN has a solution that allows you to keep your data on your own home or enterprise network and safe from predators, while still being able to access it from any remote location. We call it nConnect. One of the first use cases for nConnect is remotely accessing files and apps in NAS (Network Attached Storage, commonly known as network disks), and we are working with top tier NAS vendors in this space. They love the unique combination of security, speed, and affordability provided by NKN’s nConnect solution.Key BenefitsSecure Access from Anywhere — Access your files and apps from anywhere even if your home/office servers and devices (such as NAS) is behind a router/gateway/firewall with no public IP address or open ports, by using NKN’s unique NKN addressing and global meshed network architectureHigh speed and low latency — as a premium paid service, you can choose the highest quality nConnect tunneling servers for high speed and low latency. For example, file transfer using nConnect aggregate multiple concurrent paths and could be significantly faster than cloud file systems like Dropbox or Google Drive.Reliable — NKN’s network of up to 30,000 servers in more than 40 countries ensures there are always several high quality nConnect tunneling nodes available. One Connection — Access all the files and apps on your home/office servers and devices from one connectionEasy integration: no need to use 3rd party SDK to rewrite all your apps. If your app works on your local private network, it will work over nConnect without any additional configurations.Solution OverviewIn this case study, we will focus on NAS (Network Attached Storage) as the leading use case where we have garnered the most commercial traction so far.nConnect is a distributed service hosted on NKN’s global network that creates an end-to-end secure tunnel to your Network Attached Storage without exposing it to the open internet. In order to accomplish this, a connection is established by both the NAS device and remote application to a number of relay nodes within NKN’s public server network. Multiple nodes are used for both reliability as well as to enable faster transfer speed via multi-path data routing and aggregation. These relay nodes provide the interconnect to establish a single virtual tunnel between the NAS device and remote application. Relay nodes also provide a publicly available connection point for the NAS device, which is often connected behind a firewall or gateway and does not have a public IP address or open ports. Please see figure 1 below.Fig1: NKN Tunnel via multiple parallel relay nodeOnce a connection between the NAS device and relay node is established it will begin listening on a unique NKN Address (For example: 20d72feef55…) as shown in Figure 2. This is a routable address within the NKN network and will be used by the remote application to establish a connection to the same relay nodes as the NAS. In addition, this NKN Address also includes a public key which will help establish E2E encryption without the need to consult a 3rd party Certificate Authority (CA).Figure 2: NKN Address used to establish E2E encryptionOnce the tunnel is established, the remote application will have access to any of the local services available on the end device including access to the users content such as photos, movies, and other files. As an additional level of security, the NAS device will enforce a whitelist of authorized remote devices. Therefore, nobody else can access your data and apps at home, unless you explicitly allow them to do so.Quick and easy setupnConnect is quick and painless to set up, which involves the following steps:Users install a nConnect plug-in on their NAS, via its app store or marketplace. Upon successful completion of the installation, a QR code is shown as well as an Access Key can be copied.Users download and install nMobile Pro. In nMobile Pro, the user scans the QR code from step 1, which will establish the secure tunnel between the mobile device and NAS.In addition, users can install nMobile desktop applications on their PC. User pastes the Access Key from step 1 to establish a secure tunnel between their PC and NAS.Now users can use their favorite applications to remotely access their files on NAS, even when they are not at home or office.Success StoriesNKN’s nConnect is being tested for commercial deployment with top tier NAS vendors globally. We look forward to announcing the names of our partners in the near future. In addition, nConnect is not limited to NAS use cases and should be equally useful for all the devices and servers in your private network at home and at work.SummarynConnect gives users the power to take their data and applications anywhere they want to go. By offering a secure connection between your mobile device and your home or enterprise NAS, users can access their irreplaceable family photos or sensitive business data with just a few taps on your mobile while keeping the data private and secure on their own NAS device. All data is end-to-end encrypted and never stored in the cloud, so only you have access to your data.nConnect also offers accelerated performance when downloading data from your remote machine with several times faster download experience than comparable cloud based solutions. So, next time you want to download a copy of your daughter’s dance recital you saved at home to show family and friends, they won’t need to wait long.Enhance your NAS with nConnect and make your data and applications universally accessible today! You can find more information on our product page:https://dataride.nkn.org/filetransfer/About NKNHome: https://nkn.org/Email: firstname.lastname@example.orgTelegram: https://t.me/nknorgTwitter: https://twitter.com/NKN_ORGBlog: https://blog.nkn.orgForum: https://forum.nkn.orgMedium: https://medium.com/nknetworkLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/nknetwork/Github: https://github.com/nknorgDiscord: https://discord.gg/yVCWmkCYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/NKNORGnConnect for NAS: secure remote access to files and apps was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — Au...
NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — August 2020Thanks again to everyone that participated in the NKN Video AMA with the core team on August 13th. If you missed the event, you can still view the video on-demand on our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/pfqbOkqIRw4We have also compiled all of the questions and answers from our AMA and provided them below. Are there any updates on the partnership with iQIYI? When to expect their first use of NKN network and token? Are there any negotiations with American companies on the use of NKN CDN?We are doing well with iQIYI in China. We started ramping up our activity in July, which is when we started delivering significant traffic, and this month (August) we will be scaling up to deliver a large amount of commercial traffic for iQIYI. Between April and August there will be 40x more traffic delivered by nCDN which is significant growth over the past few months. Due to the billing cycles from iQIYI we will start to see revenue soon. Overall, this is a healthy business for NKN.In addition, based on the experience with iQIYI, we can use a similar system for other video providers in our pipeline as well. In fact, we have been testing that the same miners that are helping us to serve iQIYI could also provide content for other video streaming provider services as well on nCDN which could provide additional income for our community. We are in commercial testing with two other video platforms, and hope to close more deals during the remainder of 2020.Internationally, the CDN industry requires a different business model than in China and we have been working with cloud and network infrastructure providers to identify cost effective hosting solutions that can make nCDN profitable for miners in these markets.Could you expand a little on the nCDN model that is operating in china at the moment, from hearsay I have gathered that operating such a node is many times more profitable than running a consensus node, while not providing any security or consensus benefits to the nkn blockchain. To me it feels like a select group of chinese miners are currently making profits over the backs of the “westerner” miners which secure the network for little to no reward. The iQIYI CDN and NKN Full Node are 2 different applications that are run separately on NKN Nodes. In China, some opt to only run the iQIYI software without running NKN Full nodes and some run both. iQIYI uses quite a lot of bandwidth and will not be profitable for NKN nodes running on many of the large cloud providers like Digital Ocean and others. Many who run iQIYI CDN are running those at home on dedicated lines and not with cloud providers because of this. In addition, NKN nodes running iQIYI CDN do not compete with NKN Full node miners in terms of rewards since they are separate applications. iQIYI CDN payout is totally separate from mining rewards.iQIYI CDN is also good for the economic model as well. Since iQIYI pays NKN in fiat and we in turn buy tokens and distribute to the participating nodes, there is more circulation and more holders of the tokens as well which the community can benefit from.Hosting iQIYI CDN on NKN nodes is done using our new NKN Commercial software which gives miners the ability to choose which services they would like to host, including NKN Full Node mining, nCDN, and TUNA/dataRide. dataRide is gaining traction with customers (such as NAS vendors) and is yet another way miners could earn more rewards on our platform. Per data byte pricing wise, dataRide is much higher than nCDN.Will there be a new roadmap? We are working on it. We have lots of ideas both in technology and commercialization for NKN 3.0 and will be able to share with the community soon. When will Surge be available?Surge is being developed by the Rule110 community developer group. According to the team, it should be about 3–4 weeks until the open beta is available. Will NKN be incorporated into systems and devices such as mobile phones or TVs or routers to become NKN nodes if so are you in talks with any electronics companies such as Sony, Samsung, etcOne opportunity is to run on Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, which is typically a powerful machine with storage, CPU, and bandwidth to host our services. For routers, we already offer NKN Full nodes that run on OpenWRT based WiFi routers as well as offer firmware for the popular N1 router in China as well.We have not gone into the hardware business yet for a few reasons. Hardware takes a long time to develop, comes with a lot of uncertainties, and does not scale as well as a pure software approach. That’s why our initial focus has been on the software side and hardening our current solutions. However, once we have stabilized our software solutions we will look for opportunities to partner with hardware manufacturers. We do welcome our community or entrepreneurs to develop hardware that complements are software as well. And there are crowdsourcing models (such as indiegogo and kickstarter) that can derisk the hardware upfront costs.Theta has a deal with Samsung to deliver their CDN through their smart tvs , is NKN following a similar route? Our understanding is that Samsung will host the Theta.tv video application, which would give users access to Theta’s content channels from their Samsung TVs. Theta is focusing on live streaming, and the TV provides an additional distribution channel for their content. For NKN, we are working with device vendors such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) and WiFi router which is a better fit for our network infra.Any updates on IoT and NKN?Our specialty is on the connectivity for IoT devices. We consider NAS devices to be connected devices and are working with one of the top 3 vendors in this space to offer secure remote access services. That will be an exciting deal to expand the NKN usage and attracting new dataRide revenue, so our team is working very hard on it.We have also been collaborating with Mozilla Foundation and their WebThings Gateway that offers a way to control and manage your IoT devices at home. We also continue to experiment with providing services for webcams and other connected devices as well. However, in these cases, we work with partners that help us complete the solution and offer GTM sales channels in the IoT domain. Are there any plans for storing NKN on a hardware wallet?Hardware wallet support is in our plans and we have started the process, However, popular hardware token vendors receive lots of requests for support and because of that, the integration process can take a long time before becoming available. Will Binance support mainnet ? If yes, what’s the estimated time?Unfortunately, we cannot provide an estimated time as it’s not under our control. We are working with Binance and in the process of integration for mainnet support. It seems that more and more web3 ‘competitors’ are popping up and are partnering up with big blockchain projects. ie; orchid with chainlink. Will NKN also seek to provide offchain improvements for existing crypto projects? We are always looking for new partnering opportunities, however, offering offchain improvements for crypto projects is not an immediate focus at the moment. Non-crypto market has a much larger user base, so partnership with big non-crypto projects and companies can bring much higher value to the system. We’ve spoken about the NKN website and visuals for a long time, and recently it’s sounded as if it’s getting higher and higher on the list to complete. Do you have any timescales for this to be properly targeted? Our resources are limited and many of our front end designers have been hard at work on nMobile, nMobile pro, and NAS related projects. We do expect to provide a quick facelift on the main home page soon, but the second level pages may come a bit later once we can dedicate more resources to the effort.Upon releasing in December last year that you had the NKN Client pushed out to over 35,000 NAS devices with a particular vendor, you had mentioned talking to 2 others at the same time I believe. Did this ever develop further? And if not, is this still a market actively being targeted? The answer is YES. As we mentioned elsewhere, we are currently working hard on a solution with one of the top three NAS vendors. We believe it will be very exciting both in terms of revenue opportunity as well as technical solution.Any plans listing on Coinbase? We have been evaluating all kinds of exchanges for listing. Coinbase and Kraken are the best exchanges in the US and we are working with both and continue to provide regular updates to them. However, these exchanges do not share their listing plans for obvious reasons. Exchanges such as these look for larger token projects that are widely used including real world use cases with lots of adoption. We will continue to focus on growth in these areas as well engaging with exchanges toward new listings. However, we are not in a rush to add more listings. If you look at our volumes today, they are decent at the moment. We have done the mainnet swap on Upbit, which is already trading our Mainnet and have also been listed on Uniswap to try out the more decentralized exchanges with a different economic model. We are open to exchanges that can give our users a fiat on ramp or that can provide a different economic model for token holders. We prefer to increase the quality not the quantity of exchanges. The NKN tech is awesome no doubt. But I’m a bit fearful about marketing. We have d-Chat but very few people know this.We believe nMobile does have the potential to reach wider adoption. However, while nMobile 1.0 is useful, it doesn’t yet have the “wow” effect. We are planning to save our larger marketing push until we have further developed nMobile. In the meantime, we have done some of our own marketing as well as an incentive system coming soon to help increase adoption in the short term. When will we enter into the gaming industry (TUNA) and agreements with the gaming industry? If we look at last year’s Google Stadia launch, you can see that many of the problems with providing game streaming is related to the limitations with a gamers own home network connections, and not the cloud infrastructure itself. Until the network infrastructure to the home evolves to support the demands of game streaming it would be difficult to provide such a service at a very high performance level that gamers demand. There is also the matter of hardware. In order to host game streaming, miners will need more advanced hardware including beefy GPU, processing, and more that can make mining more expensive. We do have working Proof of Concept, but we believe there are too many limitations including good home connectivity and the availability of miners with high end machines for hosting to ensure gaming performance. In the past few days, most of the population of Belarus has been without Internet due to blockades by the state. Almost all known popular VPN services, such as TunnelBear, Nord VPN, HotspotShield, Hola, etc., have also been blocked. The only thing that restored at least some access were custom shadowsocks servers, or tools such as Psiphon (which received 2 million downloads from Belarusian users in just two days). This is an example of how the application really performs its tasks and becomes popular in a very short time. Unfortunately, n-mobile did not work in those days (I think, due to the fact that most nodes are located on popular VPS, such as Digital Ocean, AWS, Google, etc., and they are, of course, blocked in such situations). Question: Wouldn’t it be interesting for the team to develop not only towards privacy, but also towards accessibility, perhaps with the help of some additional tools, like special layers of proxy, because the potential for using such applications is really great, and most importantly, such applications are in demand in critical situations? There are a few community members that are experimenting with NKN tunneling services, as you can observe on our developer’s Discord channel. They might be able to figure out something that could work on this situation. For our team, we have a full plate of activities we have already committed including nMobile, nCDN, dataRide, and more and do not have the bandwidth to tackle such a project. However, we welcome the community to work on it.NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — August 2020 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

nMobile: The Trusted Chat
nMobile: the trusted chat“The decisions we make about communication security today will determine the kind of society we live in tomorrow.” — Dr. Whitfield Diffie, co-creator of public key cryptography and advisor to NKNExecutive SummarynMobile is an extra secure and trusted chat app, available on iOS and Android today. Why nMobile? To eradicate the roots of security hacks and privacy issues of popular chat apps such as whatsapp and signal, by removing all centralized servers.Targeted audience: people who put highest priority on security and privacy, such as crypto community, minority groups, and financial/legal/health professionals. Why is it better? nMobile runs on dataRide, a blockchain powered distributed communication system by over 20,000 independent, open source and community run relay servers. The Never-ending security crisis and the Call for trusted communicationOn Friday 31st of July, a group of hackers compromised Twitter and gained access to 130 accounts including those of Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk. These breaches often put your data, your family’s data, your employer’s data, and sometimes even your city, state, or federal governments data at risk. The more we rely on digital communication platforms due to the pandemic, the more crucial security and privacy matters.Signal or WhatsApp were originally created to meet the demand for a secure chat option. They offer a relatively secure platform where rich text messages could be sent and received between individuals and public/private groups. These applications grant end to end encryption, ensuring big improvements in messaging security at the time they were released. However, today we need even more secure communication. Applications such as Signal and WhatsApp are no longer enough to protect our private data. With their infrastructures relying on a centralized database, they are more susceptible to large scale attacks; by using cell-phone numbers as identity, their system is very vulnerable to SIM swap attacks; furthermore, your private key might be stored in a centralized server of these Apps.We can definitely communicate securely and keep our data private. But it’s going to take a new generation of platforms and services to make it happen. That is why we created nMobile. The Trusted ChatNKN versus competition (whatsapp, signal)nMobile solves these security issues by being a truly decentralized and distributed application. Instead of “don’t be evil”, nMobile “can’t be evil”. In order to accomplish this, we eliminated the possibility of security and privacy breaches by removing centralized servers entirely. This means thatThere is no centralized server hosted by any company or individual. All your data is stored on your device and never in the cloud.Your private key is only stored on your local device, and never “backed up” in the cloud. All data is end-to-end encrypted and never accessible by any relay node in transit. No surveillance, no “big brother”.So only you, and you alone, can read the messages intended for you.The ultimate secure communication powered by dataRideThe secure and free nature of nMobile almost seems too good to be unrealistically amazing. However, it’s built on amore than solid foundation as the whole network is powered by NKN’s dataRide platform, a distributed architecture with over 20,000 independent relay servers in 40+ countries worldwide that makes it nearly impossible for a malicious party to take down the network. And below are some key blockchain technologies that dataRide employs to power nMobile.dataRide is enabled natively on all NKN full node mainnet software. and takes advantage of a novel consensus we call Proof of Relay, a useful Proof of Work. Miners who run the software and relay traffic have an opportunity to earn rewards.NKN miners are incentivized to run dataRide traffic. The more dataRide traffic a mining node relays, the higher chance it will get the next block reward. This is one form of very efficient and useful PoW, which we call it Proof of Relay.dataRide enables true peer to peer data communication which uses NKN’s unique and global IDs ensured by the underlying blockchain technology, allowing communication between devices, even if these devices don’t have a public IP address on the internet, since each peer is defined by its public/private key pair. Peers uses NKN addresses (its public key) for routing instead of an IP address. So, the fundamental identity and security is ensured by underlying blockchain technology. This also solvesd the problem that most clients (e.g. mobile phones and PCs) do not have a public IP addresses, and traditionally rely on centralized servers (security and privacy honeypot) to communicate with each other.dataRide offers auses payment channels between peers, for direct payment for services using NKN token and Blockchain accounting.micropayment of volume-based data usage. e.g. a user using dataRide file transfer service pays directly to the miners who provide the relay service. There is no central body to do accounting, billing, and payment. Again, this payment channel is enabled by blockchain tech.A brighter future with trustWe believe nMobile is the future of secure communications. By offering secure communications that incorporate end-to-end encryption along with strict local storage of private keys and a distributed architecture, users can feel safe in sharing information with their friends, family, coworkers, and business partners again.Try nMobile today and rest assured your data will stay private and secure! NKN Mainnet Token Swap Upda...
NKN Mainnet Swap 2020IntroductionSince September 2019, we have enabled two-way token swap between NKN Mainnet and ERC-20 tokens. A few major milestones have been achieved since then:A very thorough and detailed security audit has been successfully completed and the final report has been published. This audit looks into all the source code of our nkn node software, as well as wallet and client SDK. Our core development team has fixed all major issues discovered during this 6-month long audit. We are certain that our mainnet is secure and dependable. There is a significant increased usage of our NKN mainnet token for applications such as nMobile, nCDN and TUNA.We have the world’s largest production mainnet with between 12,000 to 25,000 full consensus nodes, from July 2019 to June 2020. In addition, we have an absolute diversified and decentralized mining community, with less than 1% of mainnet nodes run by the NKN team.Dual token co-existenceWe plan to make both NKN Mainnet and NKN ERC-20 tokens available for the foreseeable future. Here are the reasons:Ethereum is a proven platform with one of the strongest asset security capabilities in the entire blockchain industry. NKN Mainnet is very secure, as evident from the security audit, but relatively young compared to Ethereum. It will take some time to complete integration with all major exchanges. We want to make sure that every NKN token holder has enough time to carry out the token swap.Swap scheduleThe official swap tool is located here: https://swap.nkn.orgNKN token swap between mainnet and ERC-20 is available according to the following schedule:ERC-20 to Mainnet token swap: always openMainnet to ERC-20 token swap: open for 2 weeks every 2 monthsJuly 20–31, 2020September 21–30, 2020November 16–27, 2020Future dates to be announced.Additional notes:The minimum amount to be swapped is 100 NKN.We want to make every effort possible to ensure that token holders can swap their assets in sufficient time. Please note that NKN Foundation reserves the right to change the schedule due to national holidays, major events, technical support availability, and other factors.ExchangesEach exchange has a different technical and financial requirement when it comes to an integration schedule for mainnet tokens. NKN will work with all major exchanges to make sure they support NKN mainnet token, and provide a smooth token swap mechanism for current ERC-20 token holders who deposit their assets on those exchanges. We will start with smaller exchanges and gradually move up to higher volume exchanges, with abundance of caution for asset security.Hardware wallet supportHardware wallets add an additional layer of offline security and are valuable to some of our token holders. We intend to support the most popular hardware wallets, and specifically Ledger Nano. The time schedule for hardware wallet support will be announced later, after some of our commercial product launches.Additional informationHow to tell if your NKN tokens are Mainnet or ERC-20?Mainnet NKN token address: NKN********ERC-20 NKN token address: 0x12FE45****The official swap tool is located here:https://swap.nkn.orgFor complete guide, you can find it here: https://forum.nkn.org/t/guide-nkn-s-official-mainnet-token-swap-tool/1727After reading our guide and you still have questions, please contact our customer support firstname.lastname@example.org.NKN Mainnet Token Swap Update 2020 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Potentially unfair consensus competition due to port reusing in POR protocol (Severity: low)4.1.1. OverviewTo mitigate possible Eclipse attacks on the POR consensus network, NKN puts a “one ID per IP” policy that any IP address can only host at most one NodeID by fixing the target port of outbounding connections; However, it is still possible to bypass this limitation and host multiple NodeIDs on a single IP address by implementing a NodeID proxy with dedicated listener logic.(details omitted)4.1.2. StatusUnfixed.First, there’s no effective way to enforce the “one ID per IP” policy in the current NKN architecture. However, according to NKN’s design philosophy, the only valid competitive resource for consensus is bandwidth, not IP addresses. Thus, this restriction should be removed and permit hosting multiple NodeIDs on a single IP in the future.NKN successfully complete security audit of mainnet was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Rule110 NKN OpenAPIWith the upcoming release of NKN 2.0, the community developer scene is growing strongly. Recently the developers of the community-known NKNx ecosystem ChrisT and lightmyfire and the creator of nStatus, Mutsi, decided to join force and form the first NKN Open-Source community called “Rule110”.“Rule110 is an approach to get more developers involved into the NKN blockchain. For this we will take more than 90% of our work, document it and open source it” says Chris. “We have all been working with NKN for a long time now and I think it is time to bring community development to the next level.”The team has already released the NKN open API — a project based on the NKNx API that leads the way to an easy-to-use programming interface for developers. “We believe that everyone should benefit from our long-term research in NKN. Rule110 gives tech-interested people a place for learning and get help for their projects.” comments Mutsi. Also, we asked the team about upcoming projects. “Development on the remapped NKN-explorer is already finished, so that release will come in the next few weeks. Also there will be a revamped wallet-app and of course a vanity service for generating cool Wallet addresses. I’m sure much more will come in the future” says lightmyfire.NKN Community Project built on Rule110 OpenAPI“Blockchain explorers have always been a centralized point in most blockchain ecosystems. NKN open API solves this problem by making it extremely easy for developers to host such a service and build more stuff upon it, which is critical for further decentralizing and extending the ecosystem.” says Yilun, CTO of NKN. Currently the NKN team is already running an instance of the NKN open API and will provide it as a public service. The repositories of rule110 are available here:https://github.com/rule110-io/About NKNNKN is the new kind of P2P network connectivity protocol & ecosystem powered by a novel public blockchain. How Will 5G Change The Worl...
Wireless city futureThe world is set to make an unprecedented change. Perhaps the start of the fourth industrial revolution will be 5G internet. This is the next evolutionary stage in internet speed, latency, and reliability. It will change the way we do business, the way we use social media, and even the way we game.Already, proponents predict we will be able to download whole movies and Netflix series in a matter of seconds. We’ll be able to upload photos from our smartphones in milliseconds. 5G will also change the way technology works, chief among them all-electric cars. But how will it change the world? What exactly is 5G?Internet cell tower5G will be a higher frequency but short-range cellular internet. This means that although you will have a smaller radius from cellphone towers before you start slowing down, it will give you super-fast speeds. The solution is to erect more towers. So when you are almost out of the range of one tower, another tower will automatically pick you up. The plan is to make sure you never feel a difference. The speeds will be up to 2–3 times quicker than the current 4G network. It’s also touted that 5G uses less power per bit, which is better for businesses who have an internet of things network.Related: 5G and the New Kind of NetworkHow Does 5G work? From the central server, the 5G macro towers will connect with all the devices that hook up to it. This can be, cars, smartphones, computer systems in buildings, and the family household. Operating at a higher frequency allows for more data to be sent, quicker than 4G.The downside is, as aforementioned, that the 5G masts have a shorter range. Much like radar, low-frequency waves travel much further. 5G networks use the new high frequency mmWave or millimeter-wave. Because of this, the serving coverage is shorter for each 5G base station and operators will need to increase the number of base stations to cover the same distance in order to avoid drops in internet coverage.Looking for assistance with network sharing? NKN are experts and they can help!Who provides 5G? How do millimeter waves interact with technology? What is the difference between 5G and previous networks?SmartphonesContrary to popular belief, there isn’t a wave of 5G providers just over the horizon. Any significant change in technology is always going to be incredibly expensive. The most significant players with skin in the game are Vodafone, Qualcomm, Samsung, ZTE, Nokia, Huawei, Cisco Systems, and others. The challenge is, creating a high-frequency millimeter-wave at an affordable price. This new wave interacts with technology by demanding a higher refresh rate for the data to be continuously updated and received. It will also have a higher capacity so more users can connect to the same macro tower. The main differences between 5G and 4G are a lot more speed, multi-task capability, and beamforming, which will isolate waves and send them more directly to those connected. In other words, fewer cut-outs.A brief comparison of 1G, 2G,3G, 4G, and 5G1G (Analog Cellular such as NMT) started in the 70s and was implemented in the early 80s. It had a bandwidth of 30KHz and a data speed of just 2 kbps. It was mostly used for voice communication, and only for a few that could afford it. Do you still remember those bulky brick-like Motorola cell phones with stick-out antennas that assistants carry for their boss? But that paved the way for more generations of wireless communication. In 1980 2G (Digital Cellular such as GSM and CDMA) came online and lasted until 1999. For the first time, it enables mass-market adoption of mobile communication because it offered much smaller and affordable phones and subscriptions. 2G is still voice-centric, since It didn’t have much to offer in the way of online content. It had a maximum bandwidth of 64kpbs. One of the few services, short message service (SMS) or text message, became the accidental mass market success that has lasted until today.3G was released in 1990 but lasted until very recently. It improved the quality of voice calls, while significantly increasing data speed. This enabled full web access (instead of limited mobile abridged version in 2G) and started the true wireless Internet. Building upon the global standards, it enabled affordable wireless communication to everyone from Scandinavian to Sub-Saharan Africa.4G was the Jack of all trades, with LTE leading the technological revolution. It had a frequency of up to 8Ghz and a bandwidth of anywhere between 2,000mbps to 1Gbps. The main contribution of 4G over 3G was substantial speed and latency improvements for mobile Internet. During the reign of 4G, which is still dominant today, mobile Internet traffic and commerce revenue are starting to eclipse that of fixed Internet. What 5G wants to do is simply blow them all out of the water. Rather than an incremental improvement, it’s going for capabilities 2 to 3 times more than 4G. At a frequency of 30Ghz and 1Gbps or higher in bandwidth, 5G aims to enable a new breed of mobile applications from consumer use (Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality, 4K/8K video streaming, autonomous cars) to industrial (Internet of Things, Machine to Machine communication, and high speed robotics). If you are looking for a publish and subscribe service? If so NKN offers nPubSub which can meet your needs! How will 5G change the modern world? So how will this giant leap in technology change the world? In just about every way you can think of. Imagine being able to watch movies in 4K while on the train, commuting to work. Imagine being able to download entire video games in a couple of minutes. Imagine being able to use all your devices at the same time, at the peak of their performance, without missing a single beat. This is what 5G is setting out to offer.Currently, 5G connecting technologies are being offered in the latest mobile phones. The Samsung S20 is a prime example. While the current reported bandwidth are ranging from 1 to 3GBps and 5G towers are only just being erected, it’s hard to tell if they are working at optimum settings and whether or not the technology in smartphones can fully harness the potential. The data-centric future of 5G looks set to be taking full advantage of the cloud. With so much data moving through the servers and firewalls, it’s going to be tricky to keep data protected from cybercriminals. According to NKN Official Blog, there will also be a lot of slicing and sharing between networks. Companies will need to share masts and or figure out a way to profit from sharing users.Related: 5G Enables NKN to Connect Real EconomyCriticism of 5GThere are some health concerns about 5G, regarding the frequency some of the 5G systems operate in (millimeter wave), and the densification of 5G small cells. So far there is no conclusive research results that 5G will impact health more or less than existing cellular systems like 3G and 4G. For more information, here are some balanced articles:“5G Is Coming: How Worried Should We Be about the Health Risks?” by Scientific American, September 2019https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/5g-is-coming-how-worried-should-we-be-about-the-health-risks/“Does 5G pose health risks?” by BBC, July 2019https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48616174Where is 5G currently available? Some nations are moving ahead with 5G quicker than others. Currently, there are trials of 5G networks in America, namely 31 cities such as San Diego, New York City, and Los Angeles. In the UK, Vodafone is expanding its implementation in London, Cardiff, and Manchester. China is thrusting it’s 5G network in Beijing and the neighboring cities.5G networks are set to change the world. Still, it’s not a case of technology, more so the cost of infrastructure and security, that is slowing its implementation. Our world is more connected than ever, even when pandemics are separating us physically. 5G is not a panacea, but it will make our connection faster and more secure. We look forward to more innovations around 5G that can increase industrial productivity and improve human life. How Will 5G Change The World?
