Web 3.0 Example: filecoin
Filecoin miningFilecoin in 100 wordsFilecoin’s mission is “to create a decentralized, efficient, and robust foundation for humanity’s information.” Dubbed a paid version of ipfs, it creates a free market to bridge between storage users and crowd sourced storage providers. Filecoin (FIL) is a utility token that enables mining as well as paying for storage services. Filecoin aims to compete with centralized storage services like Amazon AWS, as well as other blockchain projects like storj and sia. Filecoin mainnet went live on October 15th, 2020 and FIL is listed on most major exchanges. What is web 3.0 storageFilecoin is a prime example of Web 3.0, focusing on decentralized storage as one of the three pillars of Internet infrastructure. Web 1.0 and 2.0 storage are dominated by large cloud providers such Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure, Oracle cloud, Baidu, and Tencent.Problems filecoin addressesIn contrast, Filecoin and web 3.0 storage has the following characteristics and advantages:Decentralized and crowdsourced: anyone with extra storage can provide storage services to others. As one study finds, there are lots of idle and underutilized storage in the world, so web 3.0 storage will make effective use of them.Token incentives: Web 3.0 storage typically used a utility token to facilitate the exchange of storage services. There are a few benefits: the lack of centrally controlled corporation means less “platform tax” and better pricing for both buyers and sellers; payment settlement can be instantaneous and verifiable; a smart contract can enable flexible and fluid pricing.Proof of storage: since there is no centralized authority to ensure the client’s data are actually stored without tampering or cheating, it is critical to have an advanced consensus algorithm to enable everyone in the ecosystem the ability to verify the storage of client’s data. This is where math and algorithms replace trusted authority, and is crucial to the success or failure of a particular web 3.0 storage project.Indexing and search of data: since all the data are distributed among many crowd sourced servers and there is no single centralized server to index all the data, web 3.0 storage solutions typically have a distributed indexing and search functionality. In filecoin and ipfs, there is also content based addressing which is not dependent on where the content is stored.Data upload and retrieval: it is not enough just to store the data, fast and efficient upload and retrieval are equally important for commercial grade storage services. In Web 3.0 storage systems, there are typically Content Delivery Network types of services to accelerate the uploading and downloading of data.A brief history: from ipfs to filecoinMost people learned about filecoin because of ipfs, or Interplanetary File System. Therefore it is useful to understand ipfs a little bit as one of the foundations of filecoin. Ipfs uses content addressing and p2p network to store files in a decentralized manner. It was launched as alpha in 2015, and quickly became popular among tech enthusiasts. One notable use case is creating a limited and immutable mirror for wikipedia. It is true p2p in the sense that users will host the content for free and in kind, which could be somewhat limiting since we quickly run out of good samaritan who donate storage space for the good of mankind.Ipfs mirrored version of wikipediaThen enter the filecoin, which is dubbed a “paid version of ipfs”. The key new ingredients that filecoin added to the ipfs are token incentive and two-sided market, so the web 3.0 storage solution can move beyond enthusiast to real enterprise adoption. Filecoin’s ICO in 2017, available only to accredited investors, raised over 257 million dollars and set a new record at the time. There is tremendous interest in a major alternative to web 1.0 and 2.0 storage solutions, which is built by a strong developer team with ipfs credibility and backed by top tier VCs.Fast forward to 2020. After three years of development and several delays, Filecoin launched mainnet on October 15th, 2020. As of this writing, Filecoin token (FIL) is listed on coinbase, Gemini, Kraken, Binance, Huobi, and many other exchanges.Use cases and applicationsFilecoin brings along a large number of 3rd party applications from ipfs, as illustrated in the following diagram.IPFS ecosystemIn addition, there are some early use cases that leverage filecoin:Securely distributing large data sets onto thousands of computersStoring all of web 3.0’s dataVideo publishing as alternative to YouTube or VimeoSocial networking, gaming, and AR/VR data storageStoring developer assets such as container and virtual machines imagesIt is still early days of filecoin, and we expect to see more innovative dApps to be built on top of filecoin and ipfs in the coming months.TechnologyFilecoin is a more complex system than ipfs. Proof of Storage, is at the heart of filecoin and sets it apart from other web 3.0 storage projects. It is a variation of the Proof of Space algorithms, while adding security and efficiency enhancements. Even tuning the parameters for the algorithms is so demanding that the filecoin team has to build new computational tools to automate the process.Proof of Storage in filecoinAccording to filecoin’s founder Juan Benet:“I think no other network is using Proof of Replication, it’s an advantage we have that we created that field. So that’s one differentiating factor. We are also the only one with this fluid market structure that is meant to be optimized based on an ask and bid structure where miners and clients are able to reason about prices together and then form deals out of that. I think we are also the only ones doing consensus backed by useful storage. With other networks it may be a consensus backed by a Proof of Space, but in our case it’s useful. Those are the three biggest differentiating factors of Filecoin.”For a more in-depth description of filecoin’s Proof of Storage technology, you can read in the blog “What Sets us Apart: Filecoin’s Proof System” as well as watching the Zero Knowledge podcast episode 106 “IPFS, Libp2p & Filecoin with Juan Benet”.Business modelFilecoin’s business model is similar to other sharing economies (or gig economies) such as Uber or Airbnb, it creates a free market to bridge the consumers and providers of storage. The main difference is that this market is shared and owned by the filecoin community, instead of one single corporate entity. Protocol Labs, the developers who built the filecoin protocol, is just one of the several stakeholders in the filecoin market.Filecoin enables free market for storageAnd the filecoin token is utilized to facilitate the exchange of services, among several stakeholders in the ecosystem such as miners, clients, developers, and token holders. It is minable through useful work, by proving that they are storing a unique copy of the client’s data.Stakeholders and interactions within filecoin ecosystemEcosystem strengthFilecoin has a very strong ecosystem, in part due to its popularity carried over from ipfs, libp2p and other successful projects. It attracted a sizable and vibrant developer community and 3rd party companies to work on and extend its ecosystem.Filecoin also attracted a large number of miners, since its early testnet days. Many who missed the early bitcoin mining fortune, consider filecoin the next potential gold mine. On the eve of filecoin mainnet launch (October 14th, 2020), the miners have already amassed a respectable 561 PiB of storage on its testnet.ipfs mining communityTrends and futureFilecoin interworking with other web 3.0 projectsWith the launch of mainnet on October 15th, 2020, filecoin’s journey towards a widely adopted web 3.0 storage solution just gets started. In addition to many enhancements to the protocol itself and further expanding the available storage space to exabytes of data, Filecoin intends to build bridges and standards to interwork with other blockchain projects.Together with Compute (Ethereum, Polkadot) and Networking (NKN, Helium), Storage solutions like filecoin will forge the infrastructure foundation of Web 3.0 to create a decentralized, efficient, and robust foundation for humanity’s information.AcknowledgmentThe NKN editorial team thanks filecoin and ipfs team, and especially Colin Evran and Molly Mackinley, for supplying some of the material used in this blog post. nConnect for NAS: secure re...
A NKN case studyOne of the biggest challenges for enterprise and home internet users is being able to securely access your data and services from anywhere. Your phone, tablet, and laptop have limited storage; while cloud services such as Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive force you to upload all your data to the cloud. This not only is tedious and time consuming but also creates a target for hackers looking for your sensitive data. NKN has a solution that allows you to keep your data on your own home or enterprise network and safe from predators, while still being able to access it from any remote location. We call it nConnect. One of the first use cases for nConnect is remotely accessing files and apps in NAS (Network Attached Storage, commonly known as network disks), and we are working with top tier NAS vendors in this space. They love the unique combination of security, speed, and affordability provided by NKN’s nConnect solution.Key BenefitsSecure Access from Anywhere — Access your files and apps from anywhere even if your home/office servers and devices (such as NAS) is behind a router/gateway/firewall with no public IP address or open ports, by using NKN’s unique NKN addressing and global meshed network architectureHigh speed and low latency — as a premium paid service, you can choose the highest quality nConnect tunneling servers for high speed and low latency. For example, file transfer using nConnect aggregate multiple concurrent paths and could be significantly faster than cloud file systems like Dropbox or Google Drive.Reliable — NKN’s network of up to 30,000 servers in more than 40 countries ensures there are always several high quality nConnect tunneling nodes available. One Connection — Access all the files and apps on your home/office servers and devices from one connectionEasy integration: no need to use 3rd party SDK to rewrite all your apps. If your app works on your local private network, it will work over nConnect without any additional configurations.Solution OverviewIn this case study, we will focus on NAS (Network Attached Storage) as the leading use case where we have garnered the most commercial traction so far.nConnect is a distributed service hosted on NKN’s global network that creates an end-to-end secure tunnel to your Network Attached Storage without exposing it to the open internet. In order to accomplish this, a connection is established by both the NAS device and remote application to a number of relay nodes within NKN’s public server network. Multiple nodes are used for both reliability as well as to enable faster transfer speed via multi-path data routing and aggregation. These relay nodes provide the interconnect to establish a single virtual tunnel between the NAS device and remote application. Relay nodes also provide a publicly available connection point for the NAS device, which is often connected behind a firewall or gateway and does not have a public IP address or open ports. Please see figure 1 below.Fig1: NKN Tunnel via multiple parallel relay nodeOnce a connection between the NAS device and relay node is established it will begin listening on a unique NKN Address (For example: 20d72feef55…) as shown in Figure 2. This is a routable address within the NKN network and will be used by the remote application to establish a connection to the same relay nodes as the NAS. In addition, this NKN Address also includes a public key which will help establish E2E encryption without the need to consult a 3rd party Certificate Authority (CA).Figure 2: NKN Address used to establish E2E encryptionOnce the tunnel is established, the remote application will have access to any of the local services available on the end device including access to the users content such as photos, movies, and other files. As an additional level of security, the NAS device will enforce a whitelist of authorized remote devices. Therefore, nobody else can access your data and apps at home, unless you explicitly allow them to do so.Quick and easy setupnConnect is quick and painless to set up, which involves the following steps:Users install a nConnect plug-in on their NAS, via its app store or marketplace. Upon successful completion of the installation, a QR code is shown as well as an Access Key can be copied.Users download and install nMobile Pro. In nMobile Pro, the user scans the QR code from step 1, which will establish the secure tunnel between the mobile device and NAS.In addition, users can install nMobile desktop applications on their PC. User pastes the Access Key from step 1 to establish a secure tunnel between their PC and NAS.Now users can use their favorite applications to remotely access their files on NAS, even when they are not at home or office.Success StoriesNKN’s nConnect is being tested for commercial deployment with top tier NAS vendors globally. We look forward to announcing the names of our partners in the near future. In addition, nConnect is not limited to NAS use cases and should be equally useful for all the devices and servers in your private network at home and at work.SummarynConnect gives users the power to take their data and applications anywhere they want to go. By offering a secure connection between your mobile device and your home or enterprise NAS, users can access their irreplaceable family photos or sensitive business data with just a few taps on your mobile while keeping the data private and secure on their own NAS device. All data is end-to-end encrypted and never stored in the cloud, so only you have access to your data.nConnect also offers accelerated performance when downloading data from your remote machine with several times faster download experience than comparable cloud based solutions. So, next time you want to download a copy of your daughter’s dance recital you saved at home to show family and friends, they won’t need to wait long.Enhance your NAS with nConnect and make your data and applications universally accessible today! You can find more information on our product page:https://dataride.nkn.org/filetransfer/About NKNHome: https://nkn.org/Email: email@example.comTelegram: https://t.me/nknorgTwitter: https://twitter.com/NKN_ORGBlog: https://blog.nkn.orgForum: https://forum.nkn.orgMedium: https://medium.com/nknetworkLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/nknetwork/Github: https://github.com/nknorgDiscord: https://discord.gg/yVCWmkCYouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/NKNORGnConnect for NAS: secure remote access to files and apps was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — Au...
NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — August 2020Thanks again to everyone that participated in the NKN Video AMA with the core team on August 13th. If you missed the event, you can still view the video on-demand on our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/pfqbOkqIRw4We have also compiled all of the questions and answers from our AMA and provided them below. Are there any updates on the partnership with iQIYI? When to expect their first use of NKN network and token? Are there any negotiations with American companies on the use of NKN CDN?We are doing well with iQIYI in China. We started ramping up our activity in July, which is when we started delivering significant traffic, and this month (August) we will be scaling up to deliver a large amount of commercial traffic for iQIYI. Between April and August there will be 40x more traffic delivered by nCDN which is significant growth over the past few months. Due to the billing cycles from iQIYI we will start to see revenue soon. Overall, this is a healthy business for NKN.In addition, based on the experience with iQIYI, we can use a similar system for other video providers in our pipeline as well. In fact, we have been testing that the same miners that are helping us to serve iQIYI could also provide content for other video streaming provider services as well on nCDN which could provide additional income for our community. We are in commercial testing with two other video platforms, and hope to close more deals during the remainder of 2020.Internationally, the CDN industry requires a different business model than in China and we have been working with cloud and network infrastructure providers to identify cost effective hosting solutions that can make nCDN profitable for miners in these markets.Could you expand a little on the nCDN model that is operating in china at the moment, from hearsay I have gathered that operating such a node is many times more profitable than running a consensus node, while not providing any security or consensus benefits to the nkn blockchain. To me it feels like a select group of chinese miners are currently making profits over the backs of the “westerner” miners which secure the network for little to no reward. The iQIYI CDN and NKN Full Node are 2 different applications that are run separately on NKN Nodes. In China, some opt to only run the iQIYI software without running NKN Full nodes and some run both. iQIYI uses quite a lot of bandwidth and will not be profitable for NKN nodes running on many of the large cloud providers like Digital Ocean and others. Many who run iQIYI CDN are running those at home on dedicated lines and not with cloud providers because of this. In addition, NKN nodes running iQIYI CDN do not compete with NKN Full node miners in terms of rewards since they are separate applications. iQIYI CDN payout is totally separate from mining rewards.iQIYI CDN is also good for the economic model as well. Since iQIYI pays NKN in fiat and we in turn buy tokens and distribute to the participating nodes, there is more circulation and more holders of the tokens as well which the community can benefit from.Hosting iQIYI CDN on NKN nodes is done using our new NKN Commercial software which gives miners the ability to choose which services they would like to host, including NKN Full Node mining, nCDN, and TUNA/dataRide. dataRide is gaining traction with customers (such as NAS vendors) and is yet another way miners could earn more rewards on our platform. Per data byte pricing wise, dataRide is much higher than nCDN.Will there be a new roadmap? We are working on it. We have lots of ideas both in technology and commercialization for NKN 3.0 and will be able to share with the community soon. When will Surge be available?Surge is being developed by the Rule110 community developer group. According to the team, it should be about 3–4 weeks until the open beta is available. Will NKN be incorporated into systems and devices such as mobile phones or TVs or routers to become NKN nodes if so are you in talks with any electronics companies such as Sony, Samsung, etcOne opportunity is to run on Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, which is typically a powerful machine with storage, CPU, and bandwidth to host our services. For routers, we already offer NKN Full nodes that run on OpenWRT based WiFi routers as well as offer firmware for the popular N1 router in China as well.We have not gone into the hardware business yet for a few reasons. Hardware takes a long time to develop, comes with a lot of uncertainties, and does not scale as well as a pure software approach. That’s why our initial focus has been on the software side and hardening our current solutions. However, once we have stabilized our software solutions we will look for opportunities to partner with hardware manufacturers. We do welcome our community or entrepreneurs to develop hardware that complements are software as well. And there are crowdsourcing models (such as indiegogo and kickstarter) that can derisk the hardware upfront costs.Theta has a deal with Samsung to deliver their CDN through their smart tvs , is NKN following a similar route? Our understanding is that Samsung will host the Theta.tv video application, which would give users access to Theta’s content channels from their Samsung TVs. Theta is focusing on live streaming, and the TV provides an additional distribution channel for their content. For NKN, we are working with device vendors such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) and WiFi router which is a better fit for our network infra.Any updates on IoT and NKN?Our specialty is on the connectivity for IoT devices. We consider NAS devices to be connected devices and are working with one of the top 3 vendors in this space to offer secure remote access services. That will be an exciting deal to expand the NKN usage and attracting new dataRide revenue, so our team is working very hard on it.We have also been collaborating with Mozilla Foundation and their WebThings Gateway that offers a way to control and manage your IoT devices at home. We also continue to experiment with providing services for webcams and other connected devices as well. However, in these cases, we work with partners that help us complete the solution and offer GTM sales channels in the IoT domain. Are there any plans for storing NKN on a hardware wallet?Hardware wallet support is in our plans and we have started the process, However, popular hardware token vendors receive lots of requests for support and because of that, the integration process can take a long time before becoming available. Will Binance support mainnet ? If yes, what’s the estimated time?Unfortunately, we cannot provide an estimated time as it’s not under our control. We are working with Binance and in the process of integration for mainnet support. It seems that more and more web3 ‘competitors’ are popping up and are partnering up with big blockchain projects. ie; orchid with chainlink. Will NKN also seek to provide offchain improvements for existing crypto projects? We are always looking for new partnering opportunities, however, offering offchain improvements for crypto projects is not an immediate focus at the moment. Non-crypto market has a much larger user base, so partnership with big non-crypto projects and companies can bring much higher value to the system. We’ve spoken about the NKN website and visuals for a long time, and recently it’s sounded as if it’s getting higher and higher on the list to complete. Do you have any timescales for this to be properly targeted? Our resources are limited and many of our front end designers have been hard at work on nMobile, nMobile pro, and NAS related projects. We do expect to provide a quick facelift on the main home page soon, but the second level pages may come a bit later once we can dedicate more resources to the effort.Upon releasing in December last year that you had the NKN Client pushed out to over 35,000 NAS devices with a particular vendor, you had mentioned talking to 2 others at the same time I believe. Did this ever develop further? And if not, is this still a market actively being targeted? The answer is YES. As we mentioned elsewhere, we are currently working hard on a solution with one of the top three NAS vendors. We believe it will be very exciting both in terms of revenue opportunity as well as technical solution.Any plans listing on Coinbase? We have been evaluating all kinds of exchanges for listing. Coinbase and Kraken are the best exchanges in the US and we are working with both and continue to provide regular updates to them. However, these exchanges do not share their listing plans for obvious reasons. Exchanges such as these look for larger token projects that are widely used including real world use cases with lots of adoption. We will continue to focus on growth in these areas as well engaging with exchanges toward new listings. However, we are not in a rush to add more listings. If you look at our volumes today, they are decent at the moment. We have done the mainnet swap on Upbit, which is already trading our Mainnet and have also been listed on Uniswap to try out the more decentralized exchanges with a different economic model. We are open to exchanges that can give our users a fiat on ramp or that can provide a different economic model for token holders. We prefer to increase the quality not the quantity of exchanges. The NKN tech is awesome no doubt. But I’m a bit fearful about marketing. We have d-Chat but very few people know this.We believe nMobile does have the potential to reach wider adoption. However, while nMobile 1.0 is useful, it doesn’t yet have the “wow” effect. We are planning to save our larger marketing push until we have further developed nMobile. In the meantime, we have done some of our own marketing as well as an incentive system coming soon to help increase adoption in the short term. When will we enter into the gaming industry (TUNA) and agreements with the gaming industry? If we look at last year’s Google Stadia launch, you can see that many of the problems with providing game streaming is related to the limitations with a gamers own home network connections, and not the cloud infrastructure itself. Until the network infrastructure to the home evolves to support the demands of game streaming it would be difficult to provide such a service at a very high performance level that gamers demand. There is also the matter of hardware. In order to host game streaming, miners will need more advanced hardware including beefy GPU, processing, and more that can make mining more expensive. We do have working Proof of Concept, but we believe there are too many limitations including good home connectivity and the availability of miners with high end machines for hosting to ensure gaming performance. In the past few days, most of the population of Belarus has been without Internet due to blockades by the state. Almost all known popular VPN services, such as TunnelBear, Nord VPN, HotspotShield, Hola, etc., have also been blocked. The only thing that restored at least some access were custom shadowsocks servers, or tools such as Psiphon (which received 2 million downloads from Belarusian users in just two days). This is an example of how the application really performs its tasks and becomes popular in a very short time. Unfortunately, n-mobile did not work in those days (I think, due to the fact that most nodes are located on popular VPS, such as Digital Ocean, AWS, Google, etc., and they are, of course, blocked in such situations). Question: Wouldn’t it be interesting for the team to develop not only towards privacy, but also towards accessibility, perhaps with the help of some additional tools, like special layers of proxy, because the potential for using such applications is really great, and most importantly, such applications are in demand in critical situations? There are a few community members that are experimenting with NKN tunneling services, as you can observe on our developer’s Discord channel. They might be able to figure out something that could work on this situation. For our team, we have a full plate of activities we have already committed including nMobile, nCDN, dataRide, and more and do not have the bandwidth to tackle such a project. However, we welcome the community to work on it.NKN AMA Q&A Highlights — August 2020 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

nMobile: The Trusted Chat
nMobile: the trusted chat“The decisions we make about communication security today will determine the kind of society we live in tomorrow.” — Dr. Whitfield Diffie, co-creator of public key cryptography and advisor to NKNExecutive SummarynMobile is an extra secure and trusted chat app, available on iOS and Android today. Why nMobile? To eradicate the roots of security hacks and privacy issues of popular chat apps such as whatsapp and signal, by removing all centralized servers.Targeted audience: people who put highest priority on security and privacy, such as crypto community, minority groups, and financial/legal/health professionals. Why is it better? nMobile runs on dataRide, a blockchain powered distributed communication system by over 20,000 independent, open source and community run relay servers. The Never-ending security crisis and the Call for trusted communicationOn Friday 31st of July, a group of hackers compromised Twitter and gained access to 130 accounts including those of Barack Obama, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk. These breaches often put your data, your family’s data, your employer’s data, and sometimes even your city, state, or federal governments data at risk. The more we rely on digital communication platforms due to the pandemic, the more crucial security and privacy matters.Signal or WhatsApp were originally created to meet the demand for a secure chat option. They offer a relatively secure platform where rich text messages could be sent and received between individuals and public/private groups. These applications grant end to end encryption, ensuring big improvements in messaging security at the time they were released. However, today we need even more secure communication. Applications such as Signal and WhatsApp are no longer enough to protect our private data. With their infrastructures relying on a centralized database, they are more susceptible to large scale attacks; by using cell-phone numbers as identity, their system is very vulnerable to SIM swap attacks; furthermore, your private key might be stored in a centralized server of these Apps.We can definitely communicate securely and keep our data private. But it’s going to take a new generation of platforms and services to make it happen. That is why we created nMobile. The Trusted ChatNKN versus competition (whatsapp, signal)nMobile solves these security issues by being a truly decentralized and distributed application. Instead of “don’t be evil”, nMobile “can’t be evil”. In order to accomplish this, we eliminated the possibility of security and privacy breaches by removing centralized servers entirely. This means thatThere is no centralized server hosted by any company or individual. All your data is stored on your device and never in the cloud.Your private key is only stored on your local device, and never “backed up” in the cloud. All data is end-to-end encrypted and never accessible by any relay node in transit. No surveillance, no “big brother”.So only you, and you alone, can read the messages intended for you.The ultimate secure communication powered by dataRideThe secure and free nature of nMobile almost seems too good to be unrealistically amazing. However, it’s built on amore than solid foundation as the whole network is powered by NKN’s dataRide platform, a distributed architecture with over 20,000 independent relay servers in 40+ countries worldwide that makes it nearly impossible for a malicious party to take down the network. And below are some key blockchain technologies that dataRide employs to power nMobile.dataRide is enabled natively on all NKN full node mainnet software. and takes advantage of a novel consensus we call Proof of Relay, a useful Proof of Work. Miners who run the software and relay traffic have an opportunity to earn rewards.NKN miners are incentivized to run dataRide traffic. The more dataRide traffic a mining node relays, the higher chance it will get the next block reward. This is one form of very efficient and useful PoW, which we call it Proof of Relay.dataRide enables true peer to peer data communication which uses NKN’s unique and global IDs ensured by the underlying blockchain technology, allowing communication between devices, even if these devices don’t have a public IP address on the internet, since each peer is defined by its public/private key pair. Peers uses NKN addresses (its public key) for routing instead of an IP address. So, the fundamental identity and security is ensured by underlying blockchain technology. This also solvesd the problem that most clients (e.g. mobile phones and PCs) do not have a public IP addresses, and traditionally rely on centralized servers (security and privacy honeypot) to communicate with each other.dataRide offers auses payment channels between peers, for direct payment for services using NKN token and Blockchain accounting.micropayment of volume-based data usage. e.g. a user using dataRide file transfer service pays directly to the miners who provide the relay service. There is no central body to do accounting, billing, and payment. Again, this payment channel is enabled by blockchain tech.A brighter future with trustWe believe nMobile is the future of secure communications. By offering secure communications that incorporate end-to-end encryption along with strict local storage of private keys and a distributed architecture, users can feel safe in sharing information with their friends, family, coworkers, and business partners again.Try nMobile today and rest assured your data will stay private and secure! NKN Mainnet Token Swap Upda...
NKN Mainnet Swap 2020IntroductionSince September 2019, we have enabled two-way token swap between NKN Mainnet and ERC-20 tokens. A few major milestones have been achieved since then:A very thorough and detailed security audit has been successfully completed and the final report has been published. This audit looks into all the source code of our nkn node software, as well as wallet and client SDK. Our core development team has fixed all major issues discovered during this 6-month long audit. We are certain that our mainnet is secure and dependable. There is a significant increased usage of our NKN mainnet token for applications such as nMobile, nCDN and TUNA.We have the world’s largest production mainnet with between 12,000 to 25,000 full consensus nodes, from July 2019 to June 2020. In addition, we have an absolute diversified and decentralized mining community, with less than 1% of mainnet nodes run by the NKN team.Dual token co-existenceWe plan to make both NKN Mainnet and NKN ERC-20 tokens available for the foreseeable future. Here are the reasons:Ethereum is a proven platform with one of the strongest asset security capabilities in the entire blockchain industry. NKN Mainnet is very secure, as evident from the security audit, but relatively young compared to Ethereum. It will take some time to complete integration with all major exchanges. We want to make sure that every NKN token holder has enough time to carry out the token swap.Swap scheduleThe official swap tool is located here: https://swap.nkn.orgNKN token swap between mainnet and ERC-20 is available according to the following schedule:ERC-20 to Mainnet token swap: always openMainnet to ERC-20 token swap: open for 2 weeks every 2 monthsJuly 20–31, 2020September 21–30, 2020November 16–27, 2020Future dates to be announced.Additional notes:The minimum amount to be swapped is 100 NKN.We want to make every effort possible to ensure that token holders can swap their assets in sufficient time. Please note that NKN Foundation reserves the right to change the schedule due to national holidays, major events, technical support availability, and other factors.ExchangesEach exchange has a different technical and financial requirement when it comes to an integration schedule for mainnet tokens. NKN will work with all major exchanges to make sure they support NKN mainnet token, and provide a smooth token swap mechanism for current ERC-20 token holders who deposit their assets on those exchanges. We will start with smaller exchanges and gradually move up to higher volume exchanges, with abundance of caution for asset security.Hardware wallet supportHardware wallets add an additional layer of offline security and are valuable to some of our token holders. We intend to support the most popular hardware wallets, and specifically Ledger Nano. The time schedule for hardware wallet support will be announced later, after some of our commercial product launches.Additional informationHow to tell if your NKN tokens are Mainnet or ERC-20?Mainnet NKN token address: NKN********ERC-20 NKN token address: 0x12FE45****The official swap tool is located here:https://swap.nkn.orgFor complete guide, you can find it here: https://forum.nkn.org/t/guide-nkn-s-official-mainnet-token-swap-tool/1727After reading our guide and you still have questions, please contact our customer support email@example.com.NKN Mainnet Token Swap Update 2020 was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Potentially unfair consensus competition due to port reusing in POR protocol (Severity: low)4.1.1. OverviewTo mitigate possible Eclipse attacks on the POR consensus network, NKN puts a “one ID per IP” policy that any IP address can only host at most one NodeID by fixing the target port of outbounding connections; However, it is still possible to bypass this limitation and host multiple NodeIDs on a single IP address by implementing a NodeID proxy with dedicated listener logic.(details omitted)4.1.2. StatusUnfixed.First, there’s no effective way to enforce the “one ID per IP” policy in the current NKN architecture. However, according to NKN’s design philosophy, the only valid competitive resource for consensus is bandwidth, not IP addresses. Thus, this restriction should be removed and permit hosting multiple NodeIDs on a single IP in the future.NKN successfully complete security audit of mainnet was originally published in #NKN on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Rule110: Open API for NKN D...
Rule110 NKN OpenAPIWith the upcoming release of NKN 2.0, the community developer scene is growing strongly. Recently the developers of the community-known NKNx ecosystem ChrisT and lightmyfire and the creator of nStatus, Mutsi, decided to join force and form the first NKN Open-Source community called “Rule110”.“Rule110 is an approach to get more developers involved into the NKN blockchain. For this we will take more than 90% of our work, document it and open source it” says Chris. “We have all been working with NKN for a long time now and I think it is time to bring community development to the next level.”The team has already released the NKN open API — a project based on the NKNx API that leads the way to an easy-to-use programming interface for developers. “We believe that everyone should benefit from our long-term research in NKN. Rule110 gives tech-interested people a place for learning and get help for their projects.” comments Mutsi. Also, we asked the team about upcoming projects. “Development on the remapped NKN-explorer is already finished, so that release will come in the next few weeks. Also there will be a revamped wallet-app and of course a vanity service for generating cool Wallet addresses. I’m sure much more will come in the future” says lightmyfire.NKN Community Project built on Rule110 OpenAPI“Blockchain explorers have always been a centralized point in most blockchain ecosystems. NKN open API solves this problem by making it extremely easy for developers to host such a service and build more stuff upon it, which is critical for further decentralizing and extending the ecosystem.” says Yilun, CTO of NKN. Currently the NKN team is already running an instance of the NKN open API and will provide it as a public service. The repositories of rule110 are available here:https://github.com/rule110-io/About NKNNKN is the new kind of P2P network connectivity protocol & ecosystem powered by a novel public blockchain. How Will 5G Change The Worl...
Wireless city futureThe world is set to make an unprecedented change. Perhaps the start of the fourth industrial revolution will be 5G internet. This is the next evolutionary stage in internet speed, latency, and reliability. It will change the way we do business, the way we use social media, and even the way we game.Already, proponents predict we will be able to download whole movies and Netflix series in a matter of seconds. We’ll be able to upload photos from our smartphones in milliseconds. 5G will also change the way technology works, chief among them all-electric cars. But how will it change the world? What exactly is 5G?Internet cell tower5G will be a higher frequency but short-range cellular internet. This means that although you will have a smaller radius from cellphone towers before you start slowing down, it will give you super-fast speeds. The solution is to erect more towers. So when you are almost out of the range of one tower, another tower will automatically pick you up. The plan is to make sure you never feel a difference. The speeds will be up to 2–3 times quicker than the current 4G network. It’s also touted that 5G uses less power per bit, which is better for businesses who have an internet of things network.Related: 5G and the New Kind of NetworkHow Does 5G work? From the central server, the 5G macro towers will connect with all the devices that hook up to it. This can be, cars, smartphones, computer systems in buildings, and the family household. Operating at a higher frequency allows for more data to be sent, quicker than 4G.The downside is, as aforementioned, that the 5G masts have a shorter range. Much like radar, low-frequency waves travel much further. 5G networks use the new high frequency mmWave or millimeter-wave. Because of this, the serving coverage is shorter for each 5G base station and operators will need to increase the number of base stations to cover the same distance in order to avoid drops in internet coverage.Looking for assistance with network sharing? NKN are experts and they can help!Who provides 5G? How do millimeter waves interact with technology? What is the difference between 5G and previous networks?SmartphonesContrary to popular belief, there isn’t a wave of 5G providers just over the horizon. Any significant change in technology is always going to be incredibly expensive. The most significant players with skin in the game are Vodafone, Qualcomm, Samsung, ZTE, Nokia, Huawei, Cisco Systems, and others. The challenge is, creating a high-frequency millimeter-wave at an affordable price. This new wave interacts with technology by demanding a higher refresh rate for the data to be continuously updated and received. It will also have a higher capacity so more users can connect to the same macro tower. The main differences between 5G and 4G are a lot more speed, multi-task capability, and beamforming, which will isolate waves and send them more directly to those connected. In other words, fewer cut-outs.A brief comparison of 1G, 2G,3G, 4G, and 5G1G (Analog Cellular such as NMT) started in the 70s and was implemented in the early 80s. It had a bandwidth of 30KHz and a data speed of just 2 kbps. It was mostly used for voice communication, and only for a few that could afford it. Do you still remember those bulky brick-like Motorola cell phones with stick-out antennas that assistants carry for their boss? But that paved the way for more generations of wireless communication. In 1980 2G (Digital Cellular such as GSM and CDMA) came online and lasted until 1999. For the first time, it enables mass-market adoption of mobile communication because it offered much smaller and affordable phones and subscriptions. 2G is still voice-centric, since It didn’t have much to offer in the way of online content. It had a maximum bandwidth of 64kpbs. One of the few services, short message service (SMS) or text message, became the accidental mass market success that has lasted until today.3G was released in 1990 but lasted until very recently. It improved the quality of voice calls, while significantly increasing data speed. This enabled full web access (instead of limited mobile abridged version in 2G) and started the true wireless Internet. Building upon the global standards, it enabled affordable wireless communication to everyone from Scandinavian to Sub-Saharan Africa.4G was the Jack of all trades, with LTE leading the technological revolution. It had a frequency of up to 8Ghz and a bandwidth of anywhere between 2,000mbps to 1Gbps. The main contribution of 4G over 3G was substantial speed and latency improvements for mobile Internet. During the reign of 4G, which is still dominant today, mobile Internet traffic and commerce revenue are starting to eclipse that of fixed Internet. What 5G wants to do is simply blow them all out of the water. Rather than an incremental improvement, it’s going for capabilities 2 to 3 times more than 4G. At a frequency of 30Ghz and 1Gbps or higher in bandwidth, 5G aims to enable a new breed of mobile applications from consumer use (Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality, 4K/8K video streaming, autonomous cars) to industrial (Internet of Things, Machine to Machine communication, and high speed robotics). If you are looking for a publish and subscribe service? If so NKN offers nPubSub which can meet your needs! How will 5G change the modern world? So how will this giant leap in technology change the world? In just about every way you can think of. Imagine being able to watch movies in 4K while on the train, commuting to work. Imagine being able to download entire video games in a couple of minutes. Imagine being able to use all your devices at the same time, at the peak of their performance, without missing a single beat. This is what 5G is setting out to offer.Currently, 5G connecting technologies are being offered in the latest mobile phones. The Samsung S20 is a prime example. While the current reported bandwidth are ranging from 1 to 3GBps and 5G towers are only just being erected, it’s hard to tell if they are working at optimum settings and whether or not the technology in smartphones can fully harness the potential. The data-centric future of 5G looks set to be taking full advantage of the cloud. With so much data moving through the servers and firewalls, it’s going to be tricky to keep data protected from cybercriminals. According to NKN Official Blog, there will also be a lot of slicing and sharing between networks. Companies will need to share masts and or figure out a way to profit from sharing users.Related: 5G Enables NKN to Connect Real EconomyCriticism of 5GThere are some health concerns about 5G, regarding the frequency some of the 5G systems operate in (millimeter wave), and the densification of 5G small cells. So far there is no conclusive research results that 5G will impact health more or less than existing cellular systems like 3G and 4G. For more information, here are some balanced articles:“5G Is Coming: How Worried Should We Be about the Health Risks?” by Scientific American, September 2019https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/5g-is-coming-how-worried-should-we-be-about-the-health-risks/“Does 5G pose health risks?” by BBC, July 2019https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48616174Where is 5G currently available? Some nations are moving ahead with 5G quicker than others. Currently, there are trials of 5G networks in America, namely 31 cities such as San Diego, New York City, and Los Angeles. In the UK, Vodafone is expanding its implementation in London, Cardiff, and Manchester. China is thrusting it’s 5G network in Beijing and the neighboring cities.5G networks are set to change the world. Still, it’s not a case of technology, more so the cost of infrastructure and security, that is slowing its implementation. Our world is more connected than ever, even when pandemics are separating us physically. 5G is not a panacea, but it will make our connection faster and more secure. We look forward to more innovations around 5G that can increase industrial productivity and improve human life. How Will 5G Change The World?
